Residency Hotels invests ₹450 cr in luxury convention hotel in Madurai

The Residency Hotels, a 34-year-old hospitality chain owned by Chennai-based real estate developer Appasamy Group, has unveiled The Residency Signature, a luxury hotel-cum-convention centre in Madurai, with an investment of about ₹450 crore. The launch, reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, underscores the group’s bet on Madurai’s growing potential as a destination for MICE tourism, weddings, large social events and spiritual travel, according to Rohit Ravi Appaswamy, Managing Director of The Residency Hotels and Appaswamy Real Estates Limited.

Strategic Investment in Madurai

The property is spread across seven acres and nearly five lakh square feet. It houses 186 guest rooms, suites, banquet and event spaces, and a dedicated convention centre, positioning it as a major destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), weddings and large social gatherings. The investment of ₹450 crore signals a significant expansion in Madurai’s upscale hospitality infrastructure.

Specification Details
Investment ₹450 crore
Land area 7 acres
Built-up area ~5 lakh sq ft
Guest rooms 186
Key features Convention centre, banquet spaces, suites

Portfolio Expansion

The Residency Signature is the eighth hotel from the group. The existing portfolio includes two hotels in Chennai, two in Puducherry, and one each in Karur, Coimbatore, and Rameshwaram. The group also operates a hotel in the Maldives — the St Regis Vommuli Island — which is managed by Marriott, Appaswamy told businessline.

Growth Trajectory and Market Positioning

The launch reflects the Appasamy Group’s strategy to strengthen its presence in southern India’s hospitality sector, particularly in cities with rising tourism and event demand. Madurai, a historic temple town, has been gaining traction as a MICE and wedding destination, which the group aims to capitalise on. The dedicated convention centre differentiates the property from conventional hotels and targets high-spend segments.

Implications for the Hospitality Sector

The ₹450-crore investment represents one of the larger single-project outlays in Madurai’s hotel market. With 186 rooms and extensive banquet facilities, The Residency Signature could capture a significant share of the corporate and social event market in the region. The involvement of a seasoned developer like Appasamy Group adds credibility to the project, which is already launched and operational.
