India's equity benchmarks rallied on Monday, with the BSE Sensex opening over 300 points higher to cross the 77,000 mark and the Nifty50 rising above 24,100, according to a report by The Times of India. The surge was fueled by encouraging developments in US-Iran peace negotiations, which eased geopolitical tensions and pushed oil prices lower.
Market Performance
The opening rally reflected broad-based buying, with the Sensex crossing the 77,000 threshold intraday. Key indices and commodities moved as follows:
| Instrument | Level/Change |
|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | +300 points, above 77,000 |
| Nifty50 | above 24,100 |
| Brent crude futures | $80.17/bbl, -0.4% |
| US crude (WTI) | $77.52/bbl, +1.2% |
| Rupee vs USD | 94.32 (from May low of 96.96) |
Geopolitical Drivers: US-Iran Talks
Over the weekend, US and Iran made progress during negotiations in Switzerland and agreed on a plan to reach a final deal within the next 60 days, the source reported. The peaceful channel was reinforced by a joint statement from Qatar and Pakistan confirming successful opening round and progress toward a framework for a comprehensive agreement. This came after earlier tensions when US President Donald Trump warned of possible renewed military action, even as Vice President JD Vance held first direct talks with Iranian representatives under the interim peace arrangement.
Despite the positive talks, Tehran announced it had once again shut the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping data showed a decline in vessel traffic, with 32 ships passing through on Friday compared with 26 on Saturday.
The HDFC Bank Treasury Research Desk commented: "Over the weekend, US and Iran made progress during negotiations in Switzerland and agreed upon a plan to reach a final deal within the next 60 days. Oil prices edged lower while the dollar index rose post these developments."
Rupee and FPI Flows
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted: "Despite the confusing news coming from the West Asia talks, Brent crude is trading below $80. This market signal indicates that further flare up in the conflict is unlikely. However, the situation remains fluid and has to be watched closely. Meanwhile, rupee appreciation and tapering of FPI outflows continues, and this has the potential to impart resilience to the market."
He added that the FPI buy figure of Rs 4,859 crores on Friday was due to the FTSE rejig and not indicative of any trend. The rupee strengthened from a low of 96.96 per dollar on May 20 to 94.32 now, a trend likely to continue given the sharp correction in crude prices and expected large capital flows, particularly from FCNR B deposits.
Sectoral and Index Outlook
Vijayakumar said market momentum is now in mid and small caps, assisted by superior earnings growth potential. Bank Nifty is fundamentally strong and deserves calibrated accumulation.
Global Markets
Asian equities moved higher on Monday. Japan's Nikkei surged 1.9%, extending last week's nearly 8% rally to fresh record highs. South Korea's benchmark advanced another 2.6% after soaring more than 11% the previous week, driven by strong semiconductor demand. MSCI's broad Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan rose 1.0%, while China's blue-chip index remained largely unchanged.
In the US, equity futures recovered from steeper early declines: S&P 500 futures down 0.2%, Nasdaq futures lower by 0.3%. In Europe, EURO STOXX 50 futures slipped 0.1%, DAX futures flat, and FTSE futures edged up 0.1%.
Week Ahead Outlook
The HDFC Bank Treasury Research Desk noted that market attention will remain focused on incoming activity and inflation data, alongside central bank commentary. In India, markets will track May infrastructure output and June PMI prints for growth momentum cues. Globally, flash PMI readings across the Euro Area and the US will provide cues on manufacturing and services activity, while the US PCE and core PCE inflation prints will be key for assessing the Fed's policy path. Commentary from ECB President Lagarde and Fed officials will also be watched for policy guidance.
The dollar index (DXY) was trading at 100.76, after rallying last week as markets recalibrated Fed expectations away from rate cuts and toward the risk of further hikes.
