Hanwha lodges $1.2bn preliminary offer for Austal USA

South Korea's Hanwha has lodged a preliminary offer worth up to $1.2bn for Austal USA, one of the most strategically important naval yards in the US, according to Splash247 Maritime. The non-binding proposal, made through Hanwha Defense USA, values the Mobile, Alabama-based business at between $1.05bn and $1.2bn on a cash- and debt-free basis, the publication reported.

Deal structure and regulatory outlook

Austal has granted Hanwha four weeks of due diligence, including discussions with key US government customers, according to Splash247. Any deal would face significant regulatory scrutiny given Austal USA's work for the US Navy and Coast Guard, including submarine modules for the Virginia- and Columbia-class programmes, the report noted.

An acquisition would give the Korean conglomerate a second major American shipbuilding base after its $100m purchase of Philly Shipyard, completed in December 2024, Splash247 reported. The Philadelphia yard has since become the centrepiece of Hanwha's US expansion plans.

How Korean shipbuilders are entering the US

Hanwha is far from alone in attempting to transplant Korean shipbuilding expertise into the US, according to Splash247. The report details parallel moves by HD Hyundai and Samsung Heavy Industries:

  • HD Hyundai has struck a partnership with Edison Chouest Offshore's Tampa Ship to build LNG dual-fuel containerships in Florida.
  • HD Hyundai has also deepened ties with Huntington Ingalls Industries, a relationship that now encompasses US Navy auxiliary ships, potential joint investment in American shipyard capacity, vessel modules and naval maintenance work.
  • Samsung Heavy Industries has teamed with Vigor Marine Group, initially targeting US Navy maintenance, repair and overhaul work, with ambitions to expand into construction of commercial and naval auxiliary vessels.

Seoul's 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again' strategy

The corporate push sits behind Seoul's much larger Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA) strategy, under which South Korea has committed $150bn towards revitalising American shipbuilding, according to Splash247. A dedicated Korea-US shipbuilding partnership centre opened in Washington last month to help channel the investment.

The corporate push sits behind Seoul's much larger MASGA strategy, under which South Korea has committed $150bn towards revitalising American shipbuilding.

For investors and executives tracking US defense-industrial capacity, the Hanwha-Austal proposal highlights how far Korean capital is prepared to go to secure a foothold in American yards. The outcome now rests on four weeks of due diligence, including talks with key US government customers, and the regulatory review that would follow any formal bid, Splash247 reported.
