Equinor awards $1bn Norwegian rig deal to Transocean for three semisubmersibles

Swiss-based offshore drilling contractor Transocean has secured a multi-rig contract worth over $1 billion from Equinor for operations on the Norwegian continental shelf, according to Splash247.

Agreement Overview

The agreement covers three Cat D harsh environment semisubmersible rigs across seven rig years, excluding additional services. The base day rate is set at $399,000, but adjustment provisions will push the effective day rate above $400,000 at commencement, the report said.

Rig Assignments and Timelines

The contract applies to three rigs, each with specific program durations and start dates:

Rig Name Program Duration Expected Start
Transocean Enabler 3 years Q1 2028
Transocean Encourage 2 years Q1 2028
Transocean Endurance 2 years Q2 2027

The Transocean Enabler was awarded a three-year program expected to commence in the first quarter of 2028 in direct continuation of the rig’s current program. Similarly, the Transocean Encourage won a two-year program starting in Q1 2028 as a direct continuation of its current program. The third rig, Transocean Endurance, was awarded a two-year program expected to start in Q2 2027 after mobilisation back to Norway from Australia, according to Splash247.

Rig Specifications

The three rigs are Cat D designs, purpose-built for Norwegian winter conditions and originally constructed for Equinor. These harsh environment semisubmersibles are specifically engineered to operate in the demanding conditions of the Norwegian continental shelf.

CEO Commentary

"This agreement for seven rig years demonstrates the strength and resilience of Norway’s high-specification harsh environment market and our strong relationship with Equinor," said Keelan Adamson, Transocean’s CEO.

Strategic Significance

The deal adds substantial backlog to Transocean's order book, with the aggregate $1 billion contract spanning seven rig years. The adjustment provisions ensuring an effective day rate above $400,000 highlight the premium pricing for high-specification harsh environment rigs in Norway. The mobilization of the Transocean Endurance from Australia underscores the global mobility of Transocean's fleet to meet regional demand. This agreement reinforces the strong partnership between Transocean and Equinor in the Norwegian offshore drilling market.
