BBC World Service Highlights African Billionaires

The BBC World Service recently aired a segment featuring Mohammed Dewji, a Tanzanian businessman and one of Africa's youngest billionaires. Dewji, who has amassed his wealth through his family's conglomerate, shared insights on his journey and philanthropic commitments.

Mohammed Dewji's Business Ventures

Mohammed Dewji's wealth primarily stems from his family's business, which operates in sectors such as textile manufacturing, flour milling, beverages, and edible oils. The conglomerate was founded by his grandparents and expanded significantly by his father in the 1970s. Dewji's business acumen has propelled him to become one of the few billionaires on the African continent.

  • Textile Manufacturing: A key sector in Dewji's business portfolio.
  • Flour Milling: Another significant area contributing to his wealth.
  • Beverages and Edible Oils: These sectors have also played a crucial role in the conglomerate's success.

Philanthropic Commitments

In 2016, Dewji signed the Giving Pledge, committing to donate at least half of his fortune to philanthropic causes. He believes that billionaires have a responsibility to give back to society, a sentiment he expressed during his interview on the BBC World Service.

"I do want to make money, but I want to make money in the right way, ethically. But more importantly, I want to use this money to be able to give back," Dewji stated.

The Growth of African Billionaires

The segment also highlighted the broader context of wealth in Africa. About twenty-five years ago, Africa had no dollar billionaires. Today, there are 23, with a combined wealth exceeding 100 billion US dollars. This growth reflects the continent's rich mineral resources and relatively cheap labor, although the number of billionaires remains modest compared to other regions.

Year Number of Billionaires Combined Wealth (USD)
2000 0 N/A
2026 23 Over 100 billion
