PepsiCo and Gatik Unveil Driverless Trucking Partnership

PepsiCo and Gatik have announced a groundbreaking partnership to deploy driverless trucks across their supply chain, marking the largest commercial autonomous freight deployment to date. This initiative is operational in Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas, serving approximately 250 retail locations including Walmart and Dollar General stores.

Autonomous Freight Deployment

The partnership, which began in 2022, has seen Gatik go driver-out since June 2025, achieving a 99% on-time delivery record. The deployment covers both highways and surface streets, a significant advancement in the autonomous vehicle sector where many competitors are limited to interstate corridors. Gautam Narang, CEO of Gatik, highlighted the complexity and scale of this deployment as a testament to the mainstream adoption of autonomous trucking.

Operational and Regulatory Framework

Gatik's trucks operate without drivers or observers, using Gatik Remote Supervisors for oversight. These supervisors make high-level decisions but do not engage in remote driving. The trucks, primarily Isuzu box trucks, offer operational advantages by backing directly into docks, unlike traditional tractor-trailers. The regulatory environment is favorable, with Gatik able to operate in 29 states, and expectations for a national autonomous vehicle framework to support further expansion.

Expansion Plans

Gatik, in collaboration with Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Nvidia, is developing a production facility in South Carolina to mass-produce Level 4 autonomous trucks by the second half of 2027. The initial production volumes are in the hundreds, with plans to scale to tens of thousands of trucks. This expansion is supported by Gatik's dynamic route orchestration technology, allowing for flexible adaptation to demand changes.

Implications for the Logistics Sector

For PepsiCo, this deployment is framed as a capacity expansion rather than a workforce reduction, addressing challenges in staffing high-demand regional networks. The initiative aims to enhance delivery consistency and reliability, crucial for maintaining customer service and shelf availability. This partnership represents a shift for enterprise shippers from cautious experimentation to full-scale operational integration of autonomous freight.

Watch List

  • Regulatory Developments: Monitor the rollout of a national AV framework.
  • Production Milestones: Track the progress of the South Carolina facility and its impact on truck availability.
  • Market Penetration: Observe how this deployment influences other enterprise shippers' adoption of autonomous freight technology.
