J.B. Hunt Sees Record Intermodal Volumes, 'Massive Opportunities' in Eastern US Shift

J.B. Hunt Transport Services reported record intermodal volumes in Q2, with loads up 10% year-over-year, driven by an exodus of non-compliant drivers and a Supreme Court ruling on broker liability. The company sees 'massive opportunities' for intermodal conversion in the Eastern US, where intermodal is currently 30% cheaper than truckload. Operating income rose 32% to $259 million on revenue of $3.5 billion.

J.B. Hunt Sees Record Intermodal Volumes, 'Massive Opportunities' in Eastern US Shift

J.B. Hunt Transport Services is capitalizing on a shift toward intermodal and dedicated trucking as shippers seek 'safe, secure and reliable capacity' amid regulatory and legal changes, according to the company's second-quarter report.

The Lowell, Arkansas-based carrier posted a record quarter for intermodal volumes, with loads up 10% year-over-year (y/y), outpacing 8% growth in total intermodal carloads on U.S. Class I railroads. North American container volumes rose 5% y/y. Darren Field, president of intermodal, said on an analyst call: 'Conversion activity is at levels we have not seen in more than a decade.'

Record Intermodal Growth and Financial Performance

Intermodal revenue increased 22% y/y to $1.75 billion, driven by higher load counts and an 11% rise in revenue per load. Transcontinental volumes grew 5% y/y, while Eastern volumes surged 16% (31% on a two-year-stacked comparison). Monthly loads accelerated from 9% y/y gains in April and May to 12% in June. Higher revenue per load was largely due to fuel surcharges; excluding fuel, yields were up just 1% y/y, with a mix shift to shorter-haul Eastern lanes masking underlying yield performance (length of haul down 3% y/y).

The company's operating leverage showed sharply: operating income jumped 32% y/y to $259 million on a 19% revenue increase to $3.5 billion, beating the $3.26 billion consensus. EPS of $1.91 exceeded estimates by $0.18 and rose $0.60 y/y. J.B. Hunt has removed $135 million in structural costs over the past year through AI and automation initiatives.

Eastern Conversion Opportunities and Pricing Power

J.B. Hunt's intermodal bid season begins every October. Management noted 'massive opportunities' for modal conversion in the East, which is more competitive with truckload. The company typically requires cost savings of 10% to 15% to trigger conversion to rail; SONAR data shows intermodal is currently 30% cheaper. J.B. Hunt hopes to bridge the gap by raising contractual intermodal rates in the upcoming bid season. The intermodal unit's container fleet was more than 90% utilized for the first time in several quarters, contributing to a 43% jump in operating income per load. The unit reiterated a path to the low end of its long-term margin target of 10% to 12%, though driver wages are a potential cost headwind as the drayage market tightens.

Dedicated Segment Gains

Dedicated contract carriage revenue rose 9% y/y to $921 million, entirely due to higher revenue per truck per week from fuel surcharges. Excluding fuel, revenue per truck per week was up 2%. The dedicated truckload pipeline ended the quarter at an all-time high.

Watch List

  • Driver market tightness: Drayage driver wages could pressure intermodal margins.
  • October bid season: Success of rate increases will depend on TL rate and diesel price movements.
  • Eastern conversion: Continued shift to shorter-haul intermodal could mask yield but boost volume growth.
