International Seaways Orders LNG-Ready Tankers in South Korea

International Seaways has made a strategic move in the shipping industry by contracting up to four LNG-ready LR1 product tankers in South Korea, marking its return to the newbuilding market after a two-year hiatus.

New Orders and Strategic Alignment

The New York-listed tanker owner has confirmed orders for two firm 74,000 dwt LR1 product carriers at K Shipbuilding, with options for two additional vessels. Each of these ships carries a price tag of approximately $62 million, making the confirmed order worth around $124 million and the potential four-vessel package about $248 million. Deliveries are anticipated in 2028, according to Splash247.

Fleet Optimization and Recent Sales

This investment is part of a broader fleet optimization strategy by International Seaways, led by Lois Zabrocky. Earlier this year, the company sold seven vessels, including five MR tankers and two VLCCs, for aggregate proceeds of about $216 million net of fees and commissions. These sales generated gains of approximately $88 million. The company is focusing on younger, more fuel-efficient tonnage, aligning with its strategic goals.

Commercial Platform Expansion

In addition to fleet optimization, International Seaways has strengthened its commercial platform. In January, the company acquired sole ownership of Tankers International, a VLCC pool operator, and expanded into the suezmax segment with a new pool operation launched in March. This expansion indicates a commitment to enhancing its market presence and operational capabilities.

Implications for the Shipping Industry

The latest order of LNG-ready ships suggests that International Seaways remains committed to the product tanker sector despite an active vessel sale program. This move could influence market dynamics, particularly in the product tanker segment, as the company continues to modernize its fleet.

The LNG-ready ships will add to a fleet that has increasingly shifted towards younger and more fuel-efficient tonnage.

Watch List

  • Delivery Timeline: Monitor the delivery schedule of these newbuilds for potential impacts on fleet capacity.
  • Market Reactions: Observe how competitors in the product tanker sector respond to this strategic move.
  • Fleet Optimization: Keep an eye on further fleet sales or acquisitions by International Seaways as part of their optimization strategy.
