CMA CGM Moves to Acquire Aircraft Maintenance Specialist Crystal Aero Solutions

CMA CGM is set to strengthen its air cargo operations through the planned acquisition of Crystal Aero Solutions, a French aircraft maintenance company that already supports the carrier’s growing freighter fleet, according to Splash247.

Acquisition Details

The Marseille-based transport and logistics group has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire Crystal Aero Solutions, subject to the completion of employee consultation procedures, Splash247 reported. Financial terms were not disclosed. Crystal Aero Solutions, based at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with additional operations in Brussels and Liège, specialises in line and light maintenance services for both cargo and passenger aircraft. The company also carries out international engine support operations, particularly in Africa and Asia, and has been working with CMA CGM AIR CARGO since 2024.

Crystal Aero Solutions will continue operating as an independent maintenance provider serving airlines and third-party customers, while retaining its existing management team.

Impact on CMA CGM Air Cargo Operations

Launched in 2021, CMA CGM AIR CARGO currently operates eight freighters, including Boeing 777Fs, Boeing 747Fs, and an Airbus A330F, with eight Airbus A350Fs scheduled for delivery from 2027 as the company continues expanding its global air cargo network.

Aircraft Type Current Fleet On Order
Boeing 777F Several
Boeing 747F Several
Airbus A330F 1
Airbus A350F 8 (from 2027)

The acquisition of a dedicated maintenance provider is expected to enhance the reliability and efficiency of CMA CGM’s air freight operations, particularly as the carrier expands its fleet. Crystal Aero Solutions' experience with CMA CGM AIR CARGO since 2024 ensures operational continuity.

Market Implications

For freight forwarders and shippers reliant on air cargo capacity, this vertical integration move by CMA CGM signals a commitment to expanding its air freight services. Having in-house maintenance support can reduce aircraft downtime, potentially improving schedule reliability on key trade lanes. The acquisition also positions CMA CGM to better manage the transition to its new A350F fleet starting in 2027. Crystal Aero Solutions will continue to serve third-party customers, preserving market competition for MRO services in Europe.

Watch List

  • Completion of employee consultation procedures and regulatory approvals
  • Integration of Crystal Aero Solutions into CMA CGM’s broader logistics ecosystem
  • Delivery timeline for the eight Airbus A350F freighters starting 2027
  • Potential further acquisitions in air cargo handling or maintenance to deepen vertical integration
