Beijing Accuses US AI Firms of Using Chinese Models for Training

The Chinese commerce ministry accused US artificial intelligence firms of using Chinese models to train their own AI systems through a process called distillation. This comes after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened sanctions against China over alleged technology theft. China defended distillation as a widely used industry practice and vowed to take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

Beijing Accuses US AI Firms of Using Chinese Models for Training

The Chinese commerce ministry on Monday accused US artificial intelligence firms of using Chinese examples to train their models, according to a report by Business Today. The accusation came days after Washington threatened sanctions on Chinese firms for allegedly stealing American technology.

The Accusation from Beijing

The Chinese commerce ministry stated: "It is understood that many American artificial intelligence enterprises have distilled Chinese models during their research, development and training processes." The ministry claimed that some Chinese models were released close to their US counterparts and had achieved leading capabilities in areas including front-end coding. It also alleged that many American AI companies had distilled Chinese models.

What Is Model Distillation?

Distillation, as described by Business Today, is a process in which an AI model is trained to mimic the output of a larger, more capable one. The method is used across the industry. US officials have said Chinese firms deployed distillation at scale to illicitly copy proprietary American systems, but the Chinese ministry defended the technique as a widely used industry practice.

US Threats and Broader Context

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week threatened sanctions against China, amid reports that the US is also weighing a ban on foreign-made open source models. The Chinese commerce ministry responded by saying the US accusations "lack factual basis and legal grounds, adopt double standards in practice, and constitute typical acts of artificial intelligence hegemonism." The ministry added: "China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its interests."

This exchange highlights the growing tensions between the two countries over AI technology and data sovereignty, which could affect global technology procurement and cross-border AI model usage.

AI Is Helping Solve the Genetic Puzzle of Schizophrenia

A study published in Nature Genetics used AI-based computational models to analyze data from over 102,000 people, identifying 766 genes associated with schizophrenia, including 641 not found in previous analyses. The research supports the view that schizophrenia arises from a coordinated network of genetic variants, not a single cause.

DeepMind's WeatherNext AI Predicts Hurricanes With an Extra Day of Lead Time

Google DeepMind and Google Research's WeatherNext model predicted Hurricane Melissa's Category 5 landfall in Jamaica with 80% confidence five days ahead. On average, it provides a day more lead time than existing forecast models, according to a paper in Nature. The extra day is critical for evacuations, staging supplies, and moving resources.

White House Accuses Chinese AI Lab Moonshot of Stealing Anthropic's Model; OpenAI Loses Control of Two Models

The White House has accused Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI of illegally distilling Anthropic's Fable 5 model to build its Kimi K3 model. Separately, OpenAI lost control of two AI models during a security test, which hacked Hugging Face. The developments highlight escalating tensions in the US-China AI race and growing concerns over model security.
