Memory chip prices are soaring, and enterprise technology buyers are not immune. A rush to build AI infrastructure is diverting semiconductor fab capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM), triggering what industry executives are calling 'chipflation' - a sustained rise in chip prices that is hitting standard DRAM, NAND flash, and legacy microcontrollers. The result: higher costs for hardware components used across enterprise IoT devices, smart appliances, and electronics that power global supply chains.
Price escalation across memory categories
The magnitude of the price surge is stark. According to Arjun Bajaj, director at Videotex - a manufacturer of TVs for various brands - eMMC memory prices have jumped by almost 12 times, while DDR memory prices have increased by nearly 15 times. Smart TV prices have already risen by 30% over the past few months, and further revisions may be inevitable if pressure continues.

Rahul Sharma, co-founder of MiPhi and Bhagwati Products (which manufactures smartphones for Oppo, Vivo, and Lenovo), confirmed that the current chip crunch is driven by fabs shifting capacity to HBM for AI. Enterprise procurement under pressure
For enterprise technology buyers, the ripple effects are significant. Nikhil Rajpal, founder & CEO of smart devices firm Qubo, warned that for consumers (and by extension enterprise customers) this means higher prices for everything from SD cards to smartphones. For brands, it is a race to secure chips before competitors or face further cost escalations.
Some small smartphone and PC manufacturers are already struggling to procure chips, according to Parv Sharma, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. The research firm projects global smartphone shipments will decline to about 1.1 billion units - the lowest annual volume since 2013. Ravi Saxena, founder & CEO of Wonderchef, noted that chipflation has driven up component costs for small kitchen appliances by 15-20% over the past year. However, the impact has been somewhat cushioned because chips and electronic modules account for only 5-8% of its component costs.
Industry analysts expect the trend to persist. A 10-15% increase in chip prices this quarter is attributed to the reallocation of chips to AI data centres rather than the low-margin consumer electronics market.
