A 30-foot inflatable effigy of Elon Musk, shirtless and bearing a heart-shaped tattoo reading 'ketamine,' appeared in New York's Times Square earlier today, according to WIRED. The display was surrounded by black banners alleging 'Grok makes AI child porn' and 'SpaceX owns Grok,' referring to the Musk-owned AI chatbot whose image generation tool was used to create sexualized images of minors. Masked attendants handed out fliers but declined to speak with the media.
The demonstration was organized by Safe AI Now (SAIN), a coalition of faith leaders, child development experts, online safety organizations, and technologists, according to WIRED. It was timed to precede SpaceX's initial public offering (IPO) scheduled for Friday. The location was strategically chosen in front of the Nasdaq and the offices of JP Morgan, one of the banks underwriting the IPO.
The Grok AI Controversy
SpaceX is currently valued at $1.77 trillion, making it the largest company ever to debut on the stock market, with a starting price of $135 per share, according to WIRED. Though the public can buy shares, Elon Musk will retain the majority of voting power, potentially making him the world's first trillionaire. But a SAIN representative, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, told WIRED that this structure shifts liability to shareholders.
'This IPO is a liability shift,' the representative said. 'Elon is responsible for all of this. It's all the decisions that he's made. All of those litigation expenses, regulatory fines, investigations, all of that is basically being shifted to the shareholders.' SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The protest stems from ongoing scrutiny of Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, which Musk announced in February that SpaceX was acquiring. xAI faced multiple legal and regulatory actions over Grok's ability to generate nonconsensual explicit images:
- In January, the European Commission announced an investigation into whether xAI properly assessed and mitigated risks of nonconsensual sexual imagery creation.
- In March, three girls filed a class action lawsuit against xAI for allegedly using its technology to generate nudes of them.
- In January, 35 state attorneys general signed an open letter demanding removal of such imagery and implementation of guardrails.
- Ashley St. Clair, mother of one of Musk's children, also filed suit against xAI for allegedly creating sexually explicit images of her.
Today, WIRED reported that Grok is hosting nonconsensual explicit images of women, including US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other celebrities. In a February post on X, Musk wrote, 'Grok must win or we will be ruled by an insufferably woke and sanctimonious AI.'
Implications for Enterprise Technology Buyers
For enterprise technology leaders, the protest and surrounding legal actions highlight the risks of integrating AI tools without robust governance and safety guardrails. The SAIN representative warned, 'It's really easy to get distracted by the shiny IPO news. But there's real harm, real risk. I think if we are normalizing—from the banks that are underwriting it, to the NASDAQ that's listing it, to the shareholders who are buying into it—a company that has this really toxic platform in Grok … there's a real problem.'
Most passersby appeared unfazed, with one man posing to make it look like he was grabbing the effigy's nipples. The SAIN representative explained, 'It is very bombastic on purpose to draw attention to this really important issue.'
