Kerala's Fisheries Sector to Leverage Tech for Global Excellence

Kerala's fisheries sector is set to undergo a significant transformation as the government pledges support to develop the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) into a Centre of Excellence. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage technology and research for sustainable development in the fisheries industry.

Government Support and Strategic Plans

The State Fisheries Minister V E Abdul Gafoor emphasized the government's commitment to supporting KUFOS in its mission to achieve international standards. The university's Strategic Action Plan and Institutional Development Plan for 2026–2031 outline a roadmap for sustainable fisheries transformation.

"KUFOS plays a crucial role in the development of the fisheries sector and the blue economy," said Minister Gafoor.

Knowledge Cluster for Collaborative Research

In addition to KUFOS's development, the government plans to establish a knowledge cluster to facilitate collaboration among research institutes. This cluster aims to address challenges such as climate change and resource management through coordinated research efforts.

Infrastructure and Technological Innovations

The proposed development of the Munambam Fisheries Harbour into a Green Smart Harbour is another key project. This ₹200-crore initiative will feature environmentally sustainable infrastructure and modern facilities to meet international export standards.
