India mulls curbing cane use for ethanol to tame record-high sugar market
India is considering restricting sugarcane diverted to ethanol in the season starting October to boost sugar output and cool record-high domestic prices, according to two government and two industry sources cited by Reuters. Reduced rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka has raised supply concerns, and a decision could come by the end of next month. About 3 million metric tons of sugar — roughly 10% of output — was diverted to ethanol in the current year.
