G7 Leaders Agree to Cut China Dependence on Critical Minerals by 2030 with New Platform
G7 leaders agreed to reduce their dependence on China for critical minerals, setting a target to cut reliance on any single non-G7 supplier for rare earths and permanent magnets to below 60% by 2030. They will create harmonised mechanisms and a platform supported by the International Energy Agency, starting with lithium and nickel pilots. China currently controls about 90% of global processed rare earths and permanent magnets.
Two New Urea Plants to Boost India's Domestic Production, Reduce Import Dependence
India is set to add 25.4 lakh tonnes of annual urea production capacity with two new fertiliser plants expected to begin operations soon, a move the government says will strengthen domestic availability and reduce reliance on imports. Domestic urea production hit a record 314.07 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, up from 225 lakh tonnes in 2014-15. Despite geopolitical disruptions, the government maintains subsidised retail prices.
