Australia dock workers demand 28-hour week as AI automation expands at DP World ports
Australian dock workers, represented by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), are demanding a 28-hour work week with no loss of pay as DP World expands AI and automation at its terminals. A study commissioned by the MUA warns that the automation programme threatens over 1,000 jobs, or more than 60% of the dock and maintenance workforce. DP World, which handles around 40% of Australia's container shipments, has proposed AI-assisted remote-control cranes and driverless vehicles.
