India Cuts Broken Rice Share in PDS Under New Rice Milling Transformation Scheme

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Rice Milling Transformation scheme, cutting broken rice content in PDS rice to 10% (raw) and 5% (parboiled). The move aims to evacuate record-high foodgrain stocks and save storage space. Phase I allocates 50 lakh tonnes of rice across states.

India Cabinet Approves Slashing Broken Grain in PDS Rice, Diverts 100% Broken to Ethanol

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a phased reduction in broken grain content in PDS rice from 25% to 10% for raw rice and from 16% to 5% for parboiled rice by 2027-28. The separated 100% broken rice will be channelled to ethanol production, reducing logistics costs by ₹2,161 crore annually and improving quality under PMGKAY.
