India urged to shift to need-based grain procurement, allow private sector to buy more, says Ramesh Chand
Former NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand has proposed that India shift to need-based procurement of wheat and rice, limiting government purchases to public distribution system and welfare scheme demand, while allowing the private sector to buy more grains. He suggested ensuring minimum support price (MSP) through a price differential payment via direct benefit transfer. The proposal was made at the Wheat Products Promotion Society conclave, where other speakers discussed value addition and a new agriculture export complex near Jewar airport.
