India's Dairy Demand Surges in Smaller Cities

India's organized dairy market is experiencing significant growth beyond its metropolitan strongholds, with smaller cities such as Thrissur in Kerala, Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu, and Manipal in Karnataka emerging as key demand drivers. This shift is attributed to rising incomes, rapid urbanization, and a growing preference for branded, quality-assured dairy products.

Rising Demand in Smaller Cities

Industry executives highlight that consumers in these smaller cities are increasingly mirroring the consumption patterns of larger urban centers. Dr. K Rathnam, CEO of Milky Mist, notes that products like packaged curd have transitioned from seasonal purchases to everyday staples. This change is driven by consumer priorities for convenience, consistency, and food safety.

"Curd has become an everyday staple, with routine-consumed products such as paneer and curd accounting for nearly 80% of our sales revenue," said Dr. K Rathnam.

Supply Chain Innovations

To meet this growing demand, dairy brands are expanding their presence in smaller cities through strategies like sachetisation and deeper retail penetration. Subhashis Basu, Chief Business Officer – Dairy at Britannia Bel Foods Private Limited, emphasizes the role of improved cold-chain infrastructure in enhancing product availability.

  • Deployment of visi-coolers
  • Expansion into neighborhood retail outlets
  • Investments in cold-storage facilities

Value-Added Dairy Products

The demand is not limited to basic milk products. There is a notable increase in the consumption of value-added dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and milk-based beverages. Srideep Kesavan, CEO of Heritage Foods, observes that consumer behavior in Tier-2 markets is beginning to resemble that of metro shoppers.

Sustainability in Packaging

In a parallel development, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is pioneering sustainable packaging with a biodegradable milk packaging film. This innovation, introduced through Mother Dairy, is designed to degrade in soil within two years, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional LDPE packaging.

Outlook

The expansion of India's dairy market into smaller cities is expected to continue, driven by ongoing urbanization and rising consumer awareness of nutrition and wellness. The introduction of sustainable packaging solutions further aligns with global environmental goals, positioning India's dairy sector for sustainable growth.
