Tamil Nadu Mango Farmers Boost Yields with High-Density Planting

Tamil Nadu mango farmers have significantly increased their yields by adopting ultra high-density planting (UHDP) techniques. This shift, supported by Coca-Cola's Project Unnati, has transformed traditional farming practices, allowing for multiple harvests annually and improved income stability.

Tamil Nadu Mango Farmers Boost Yields with High-Density Planting

Tamil Nadu mango farmers are experiencing a bumper harvest thanks to the adoption of ultra high-density planting (UHDP) techniques. This innovative approach has allowed farmers in the Theni and Dindigul districts to double their mango yields, transforming the economics of mango farming in the region.

Project Unnati's Impact

Launched in 2023, Coca-Cola's Project Unnati has been pivotal in this transformation. By providing free grafted seedlings of Neelam and Bengaluran mango varieties, the project has enabled farmers to transition from traditional wide-spacing methods to UHDP, which involves planting mango seedlings just 5 meters apart. This has reduced the gestation period from 6-7 years to just 2 years.

"We actually pluck and throw the first flowering, so that from the next stage, there will be a higher yield," explained G Rajaraman, Subject Matter Specialist at the ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

Enhanced Farming Techniques

Under UHDP, farmers can harvest mangoes twice a year, with yields reaching 10-12 tonnes per acre compared to the previous 4-5 tonnes. This method not only increases productivity but also reduces labor costs, as the trees are maintained at a height of below 6 feet.

  • Drip Irrigation: Ensures efficient water use.
  • Scientific Canopy Management: Helps in pest and disease control.

Economic Benefits

The economic benefits of this shift are substantial. Farmers like M Suresh from Andipatti have seen their incomes stabilize and grow, as they can now sell mangoes even in the off-season months of November-December.

Metric Traditional Method UHDP Method
Yield (tonnes/acre) 4-5 10-12
Gestation Period (yrs) 6-7 2

Future Outlook

With the success of Project Unnati, the initiative is expanding to other districts such as Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The continued adoption of UHDP and associated techniques promises to further enhance productivity and income for Tamil Nadu's mango farmers.

Upcoming data releases from the USDA and FAO will provide further insights into global mango production trends and potential market impacts.
