UPL launches Ricebeaux smart herbicide for modern rice farming in India

UPL Sustainable Agri Solutions, a crop protection and agri business company, has launched 'Ricebeaux', a smart herbicide designed for modern rice farming. The product was developed after more than 10 years of dedicated research and development and validated through extensive multi-location trials across major rice-growing regions in India, according to a media statement.

Weed Management Challenges in Rice Farming

Rice farmers today face rising weed management challenges due to erratic monsoon patterns and limited labour availability, the statement said. Higher labour costs are increasing dependence on post-emergence herbicides, often leading to tank mixes, repeated sprays, or higher doses for effective control. At the same time, tough weeds such as Echinochloa crusgalli and Cyperus iria and Cyperus difformis are becoming more widespread and harder to manage.

Farmers are looking for a single application that can control grasses, sedges, and broadleaf weeds together. They want a solution that ensures crop safety, is easy to apply, and helps improve yield. There is also a growing need for solutions that can reduce complexity in the field and provide consistent performance, the statement said.

How Ricebeaux Works

'Ricebeaux' is a smart, broad-spectrum, systemic, early post-emergence herbicide that combines two proven active ingredients — Propanil and Penoxsulam — with different modes of action. This combination delivers strong and reliable weed control across key weed flora of grasses and sedges, the statement said.

Feature Description
Active Ingredients Propanil + Penoxsulam
Mode of Action Dual mode (contact and systemic)
Application Timing Early post-emergence, at 2-3 leaf stage of weeds
Suitable for Transplanted rice and wet direct-seeded rice
Formulation Ready pre-mix, no tank mixing needed

'Ricebeaux' offers a dual mode of action which helps in improving performance as well as managing herbicide resistance. The formulation provides both contact and systemic action, ensuring better and long lasting control of weeds. It supports healthy crop growth and reduces crop-weed competition during critical stages. The product is suitable for different rice cultivation methods, including transplanted rice and wet direct-seeded rice.

Convenience and Consistency

The product comes as a ready pre-mix formulation, which removes the need for tank mixing. Its smart formulation ensures convenience, flexibility, and consistent performance in the field, the statement said. It is recommended for application at the two-three leaf stage of weeds for best results.

Implications for Rice Farming

By addressing key farmer pain points — erratic weather, labour shortages, herbicide resistance, and complex tank mixing — Ricebeaux could help streamline weed management in Indian rice fields. For commodity traders and agribusiness professionals, the launch signals UPL's continued investment in tailored crop protection solutions for staple crops like rice. While specific pricing or market share data was not disclosed, the product's focus on reducing farmer input costs and improving yield consistency could influence input demand patterns in major rice-growing regions.

Lower maize acreage and sugar stock uncertainty shift focus to rice for ethanol in India

With maize acreage in top five producing states falling over 13% and sugar stocks expected very low at season end, India's ethanol blending programme is likely to depend more on rice. The government's target of 20% ethanol blending requires about 1,100 crore litres, and reduced broken-rice share in official stocks could boost feedstock availability. Fresh kharif arrivals are expected to strengthen supply.

Indian rice export prices hit near 10-month high on tight paddy supplies and monsoon concerns

Indian rice export prices rose to a near 10-month high this week, driven by tight paddy supplies and concerns over the new-season crop after patchy monsoon rainfall, according to Reuters. The 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $356-$361 per ton, up from $352-$357 last week. Adverse weather also affected crops in Bangladesh, while Vietnam saw lower prices due to building supplies from the summer-autumn harvest.
