Corteva Launches Mavilon Granular Insecticide for Pest Management in Indian Rice

Corteva has introduced Mavilon, a granular insecticide for pest management in rice in India, according to a company statement published on June 1, 2026. The product targets key pests such as Brown Planthopper (BPH) and stem borer, which cause crop stress, yield loss, and reduced grain quality across rice-growing regions.

The Pest Challenge in Indian Rice Cultivation

Rice is a daily staple central to India's agricultural economy, the company noted. Yet farmers face a persistent and costly threat from pests like BPH and stem borer. Most farmers manage these pests reactively, spraying only after infestation is visible. This approach has real limitations: delayed detection means damage is often already underway before action is taken. Labour shortages at peak periods, combined with dependence on rain-free windows, add further operational uncertainty at critical moments in the crop cycle.

Mavilon’s Mode of Action and Benefits

Applied once at 30–35 days after transplanting, Mavilon begins protecting the crop before visible damage occurs. Its innovative granular formulation delivers up to 60 days of control against BPH and up to 15 days against stem borer, the company said in a statement. This helps safeguard the crop through its most yield-critical phases. By intervening early, Mavilon helps farmers stay ahead of pest pressure rather than responding to it.

The benefits of Mavilon extend beyond protection. By reducing dependence on repeated foliar sprays, Mavilon cuts operational complexity and the need for last-minute interventions. Farmers gain greater control over their operations, leading to higher and more predictable outcomes each season.

Corteva’s Commitment to Sustainable Crop Protection

Mavilon furthers Corteva’s commitment to scientific and sustainable crop protection solutions that safeguard crop health and strengthen grower profitability across India, the company said.

Implications for Rice Supply Chains

For commodity traders and analysts, the introduction of a long-duration granular insecticide like Mavilon could influence rice yield stability in India. By reducing pest-induced losses, the product may help smooth out supply fluctuations from key growing regions. However, adoption rates and field efficacy will determine the actual impact on production volumes. No specific pricing or volume targets were disclosed in the announcement.

El Nino May Weaken India's Monsoon, Threaten Rice and Maize Output, FAO Warns

The FAO has warned that the newly begun El Nino phase may weaken India's summer monsoon, putting rainfed crops like rice and maize under stress during the kharif season. Historical analysis shows that during the 2015-16 El Nino, India's maize output fell by 4% and rice dropped by 1%, while Southeast Asia lost about 15 million tonnes of rice. The agency also flagged that disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz are raising energy and fertiliser costs as farmers prepare for sowing.

India's foodgrain output hits record 357.7 mt in 2024-25, transforming global trade landscape

India's agricultural sector achieved record foodgrain production of 357.7 million tonnes in 2024-25, according to a government report. Rice output hit an all-time high, making India the world's largest rice producer. The growth in oilseeds and horticulture reduces import dependence but significant edible oil imports continue. Policy shifts including higher public investment and expanded procurement are driving the transformation, with implications for global commodity trade.
