Etsy Is In Its Flop Era, and Sellers Are Fleeing

Longtime Etsy sellers are leaving the platform in droves due to an influx of AI-generated art and drop-shipped goods, which have caused sales to plummet by up to 98% for some vendors. In response, a new crafts marketplace called Fybe will launch on August 1, explicitly banning AI and drop-shipping.

Etsy Is In Its Flop Era, and Sellers Are Fleeing

Etsy, once a haven for handmade and vintage goods, is experiencing a mass exodus of sellers frustrated by the platform’s policies on AI-generated content and drop-shipping, according to a report by WIRED. Sellers report sales declines of 30% to 98%, with many attributing the drop to an influx of AI-generated listings that outrank handmade items in search results.

The Sales Collapse

Emily Olson, a Colorado-based artist who sold watercolor pet portraits for $75 to $300 each, earned over $40,000 on Etsy in 2021. By 2022, she noticed a sharp decline. “Competitors flooded the platform, and she kept finding copies of her work on drop-shipping sites like Alibaba,” WIRED reported. Her sales fell 30% in 2022 and another 50% in 2023. Viktor, a UK illustrator with a 10-year Etsy history, said his sales dropped 98% in the past year. “People have learned not to trust once-trusted sites like Etsy, because they are tired of seeing AI slop,” Viktor told WIRED.

Etsy’s AI Policy

In 2024, Etsy officially announced it would continue to allow AI-generated art on the condition that sellers disclose it. Sellers say enforcement is weak. Chloe Rose, an artist who sold stickers and watercolors, told WIRED: “The whole AI side of things has really, really hampered Etsy for sellers, big time.” The subreddit r/EtsyCommunity features dozens of threads griping about “AI-generated slop” that isn’t labeled, with one user writing: “Every maker I've talked to is basically screaming into the void about it, and Etsy doesn't seem to care.”

A New Competitor Emerges

Fybe, a new online crafts marketplace, will open to vendors on August 1, 2026. Founder Rachel Powell said the platform “explicitly prohibits AI-generated content and drop-shipping on the platform, and will rely on volunteer moderators and direct conversations with sellers to ensure all products are human-made.” Powell noted that both buyers and sellers on Etsy “are a little discontented” and that Fybe aims to “fill a very real need in the community.”

Seller Response

Olson posted a YouTube video in January 2025 titled “Etsy Was Great … Until It Wasn’t—Why I’m Walking Away,” saying in the video: “Etsy doesn’t align with my values these days. It feels like they’ve just become another giant corporation chasing profits above all else.” The migration is not limited to individual artists; a burgeoning market of online entrepreneurs promotes Etsy as a place for AI-driven side hustles, which longtime vendors say is eroding the platform’s handmade aesthetic.

Implications for Marketplace Operators

For B2B sellers and marketplace operators, the Etsy situation highlights the risk of platform policies that fail to differentiate between handmade and AI-generated goods. As sellers flee, new entrants like Fybe may capture market share by enforcing stricter rules. The shift also underscores the importance of brand trust and the potential for community-driven moderation to attract premium sellers. Operators should monitor how Etsy and Fybe compete for talent and whether drop-shipping and AI policies become decisive factors in seller loyalty.
