Baltic Exchange appoints Marcura executive Sigrid Teig as deputy CEO

The Baltic Exchange has appointed shipping and technology executive Sigrid Teig as deputy chief executive, according to Splash247. Teig joins the freight market benchmark provider after most recently serving as director of strategic customer partnerships at maritime technology group Marcura, the industry publication reported.

Appointment details

Per Splash247, Teig joined Marcura in Singapore in 2020 and has also held senior roles in the dry bulk sector. Before moving into maritime technology, she spent several years with Western Bulk, including management positions in Singapore, and later worked independently on shipping process improvement.

Commenting on her appointment, Teig said:

"It is an honour to join Baltic Exchange at such an exciting yet critical time for the global maritime sector. More than ever, our industry needs effective, reliable benchmarking data to navigate volatility, boost transparency and support the decision-making of shipping's stakeholders. Baltic Exchange has held an important role at the heart of the maritime industry for more than 280 years and it is a privilege to now be able to contribute to its legacy and drive it forward for the benefit of its members and the entire maritime industry."

Career timeline

Splash247 reported the following career steps for Teig:

  • Joined Marcura in Singapore in 2020 as director of strategic customer partnerships
  • Previously held management positions at Western Bulk in Singapore
  • Later worked independently on shipping process improvement after leaving Western Bulk

Leadership transition

The appointment comes as the SGX-owned Baltic moves through a leadership transition, according to Splash247. The organisation said last October that chief executive Mark Jackson would remain with the Baltic with a broader remit focused on strategic initiatives and product development.

Implications for freight operators

For freight forwarders, shipowners and logistics managers, the Baltic Exchange is a freight market benchmark provider, as described by Splash247. Teig's own words highlight a focus on "effective, reliable benchmarking data" to help the industry "navigate volatility" and "boost transparency" — priorities that matter to any operator settling freight contracts or tracking rate direction.

Her background also brings dry bulk and maritime technology experience to the senior leadership team. Splash247 noted her senior roles in the dry bulk sector and her time at maritime technology group Marcura, which suggests that Baltic members may benefit from a leadership perspective spanning both commercial shipping and digital freight tools.

Watch list

  • Further leadership announcements from the Baltic Exchange, including the scope of Mark Jackson's new role focused on strategic initiatives and product development
  • Potential moves to expand or upgrade the Baltic's benchmarking data products under the new deputy chief executive
  • Any signals from Teig's maritime technology background that could shape how the Baltic delivers indices and data to members

Maritime rates back on the rise as supply-side pressures lift China-U.S. spot freight rates

Spot rates for containers from China to U.S. East and West Coasts are climbing again, up $1,328 on the West Coast and roughly $413 on the East Coast since late July. FreightWaves reports the rise is supply-driven, with China-to-U.S. bookings down 4% year over year, while storms and congestion hit Shanghai, Ningbo and Shenzhen. The Panama Canal Authority has issued draft restrictions into September as El Niño brings drought-like conditions.
