COSCO Expands LNG Fleet with $953m Order at Jiangnan

COSCO Shipping Energy has made a significant move to bolster its LNG shipping capabilities by placing an order for four new LNG carriers at Jiangnan Shipyard. This deal, valued at approximately $953 million, marks a strategic expansion of COSCO's LNG fleet, aligning with the rising demand for LNG transportation. The vessels, each with a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters, are slated for delivery between 2029 and 2030.

Strategic Expansion

The order is part of COSCO's long-term growth strategy to enhance its ability to market and operate gas tonnage independently. Market sources suggest these vessels are intended for long-term employment with energy major Shell, continuing a trend of charter-backed LNG orders.

Impact on LNG Shipping

This order reinforces Jiangnan Shipyard's position as a leading player in the LNG carrier market. The shipyard has secured at least 10 LNG carrier orders this year, including contracts with Eastern Pacific Shipping and Minsheng Financial Leasing. These developments highlight the growing demand for LNG carriers, driven by global energy needs.

Implications for Shippers

For shippers and logistics managers, this expansion by COSCO could mean increased availability of LNG shipping capacity in the coming years. Companies involved in LNG transportation should consider aligning their long-term strategies with these developments to capitalize on the growing market.
