The problem: fragmented systems and manual copying

No broker or commercial manager thinks in terms of tabs, fields and forms; they focus on positions, cargoes and risks. Yet many shipping dealmakers are forced to work like clerks because their support systems aren't up to the job, Splash247 reported. The typical workflow: open one system, enter one fact, get one result, copy that to another system. This happens five times per email, fifty emails per day. This fragmented approach slows response times, loses information between systems, and provides a poor foundation for decision-making.

Historically, each software vendor built three components: a database, a backend, and a frontend. Different packages serve different functions, from voyage calculations to market information, and cross-system communication is difficult. The most common integration method is having a human copy and paste it all together, according to Splash247.

How AI changes the game

AI alters this in two critical ways, wrote Will Robinson, founder of HelmOS. First, AI-assisted coding drastically shortens build time for new features and connections. A feature that might have needed months now takes weeks, perhaps even days. This makes it much easier to connect data from different sources reliably and quickly. Second, AI excels at reading and sorting data from unstructured sources such as emails, WhatsApp messages, and web pages. Users can now get instant feedback when an email arrives, or ask a question in one place and get an answer from five trusted sources.

Data layer consolidation

Automated data gathering does not commoditise data; bad data travels further and faster, making trustworthy data more valuable. Data providers have consolidated, Splash247 noted. Kpler bought MarineTraffic, FleetMon, and Spire Maritime, then secured $1bn of growth equity investment. Veson added Q88, VesselsValue, and Oceanbolt, while Signal Ocean acquired AXSMarine. Unique, hard-to-generate data is being treated as strategic infrastructure for commercial teams.

The battle for the surface

With consolidated data layers in place, the question is what users will interact with each day. Instead of acting as clerks passing data between silos, users are likely to spend time on a surface that works for them, understanding what they aim to achieve and connecting to the needed data layers. This surface is not just a chatbot; it must understand workflow, decision context, find data sources, show them clearly, and place logic in repeatable deterministic code with an audit trail, Splash247 reported.

Recent feature launches show this shift is underway. The Veson Platform offers a suite of products — from mail to vessel data to voyage management — in one place. Sedna’s integrations with IMOS and GeoServe show voyage and port DA data directly inside the user’s workflow.
