Air Hong Kong Leases Airbus A330 Cargo Jet from US Provider ATSG, Expanding Regional Freighter Fleet to 15

Air Hong Kong, the freighter subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways, has signed a lease with Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) for an Airbus A330-300 passenger-converted cargo jet, bringing its all-A330 fleet to 15 aircraft, according to FreightWaves. The aircraft, expected to join the fleet in the fourth quarter of 2026, will primarily serve mainland China and other regional destinations on behalf of lead customer DHL Express.

Lease Details and Fleet Expansion

The lease was announced by the parent company on Thursday, 22 June 2026. The A330 freighter will join Air Hong Kong's existing all-A330 fleet, which after this addition will total 15 aircraft. The deal is significant for ATSG, as it marks only the third A330-300 the company has converted to cargo configuration and placed with a customer. ATSG, historically a Boeing 767 operator, had previously planned to acquire 29 A330s for cargo conversion. The first two converted A330s were delivered to Turkey's ULS Cargo Airlines last year.

Cathay Cargo, a top-10 global cargo airline by traffic, operates its own fleet of 20 Boeing 747 freighters and manages cargo on Cathay Pacific passenger aircraft. It has also ordered eight A350F next-generation freighter aircraft from Airbus. The new A330 freighter is intended to complement these future A350F freighters, providing greater agility in building regional cargo networks.

Operational Implications for Cathay Cargo and DHL Express

According to Dominic Perret, head of Cathay Cargo, the additional capacity from Air Hong Kong's latest A330 freighter will support Cathay Cargo's capacity growth plans, strengthen the network, and reinforce Hong Kong's status as the world's leading air cargo hub. In a news release, Perret stated:

"The Cathay Group is strengthening our freighter fleet to support Cathay Cargo's capacity growth plans, strengthen our network, and reinforce Hong Kong's status as the world's leading air cargo hub. The additional capacity offered by Air Hong Kong's latest A330 freighter will complement Cathay Cargo's future A350F freighters, providing us with greater agility to build our regional cargo network and making more options available for our freight forwarder partners."

For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this lease signals increased regional air cargo capacity, particularly on routes between Hong Kong and mainland China as well as other Asian destinations. The aircraft will primarily support DHL Express, a key customer, which means enhanced time-definite delivery options for shippers using DHL's network. The medium widebody A330 is well-suited for high-volume regional corridors, offering a balance of range and payload.

ATSG's Strategic Shift

ATSG's involvement in this lease is noteworthy, as the company has historically focused on Boeing 767 freighter leases. The third A330-300 conversion indicates a gradual diversification into Airbus platforms. FreightWaves reported that ATSG at one point planned to acquire 29 A330s for cargo conversion, suggesting a potential ramp-up in A330 freighter availability in the market. This could provide additional leasing options for cargo airlines seeking medium widebody capacity.

Shipper and Operator Implications

For shippers relying on air freight between Hong Kong and mainland China, this additional capacity may help alleviate peak-season congestion and provide more consistent space availability. The combination of Cathay Cargo's 747 fleet and the upcoming A350Fs, along with Air Hong Kong's A330s, creates a multi-tiered freighter network that can handle both long-haul and regional demand. Operators and forwarders should note that the new aircraft is expected to be operational by Q4 2026, in time for the traditional air cargo peak season.

Watch List

  • Delivery timing: The A330 freighter is slated to join Air Hong Kong's fleet in Q4 2026; any delays in conversion or delivery could affect capacity plans.
  • ATSG's A330 pipeline: Future conversions under ATSG's planned 29-aircraft program could bring additional A330 freighters to market, affecting lease rates and availability.
  • A350F delivery schedule: Cathay Cargo's first A350F deliveries (eight on order) will further reshape its freighter composition; integration with Air Hong Kong's A330 fleet will be key for network optimization.
  • DHL Express demand: As the primary customer, any changes in DHL's Asia-Pacific volume growth could influence Air Hong Kong's utilization and future fleet decisions.

2026 Air Cargo Contract Rates Forecast to Rise Up to 15% on Iran War Capacity Crunch

Air cargo contract rates are now expected to rise 5% to 15% in 2026 instead of falling, according to freight analytics firm Xeneta, because renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States are reducing airline capacity through the critical Middle East corridor. The war that began Feb. 28 immediately forced more than 12% of global air cargo capacity out of service. Cathay Pacific has postponed resumption of services to Dubai and Riyadh indefinitely.
