Warehouse cuts, trucking bankruptcies mount as freight distress deepens across U.S. supply chain

A new round of WARN notices in Indiana and bankruptcy filings across several states shows deepening distress in trucking, warehousing, and contract logistics. Humano and SIMOS plan to cease operations at a Radial facility in Avon, affecting 1,160 workers, while small carriers like Tucker Boyz Transportation and Navstar Express seek court protection. Shippers should prepare for service disruptions in affected regions.

Warehouse cuts, trucking bankruptcies mount as freight distress deepens across U.S. supply chain

A wave of bankruptcy filings and mass layoffs in warehousing and trucking is signaling deepening distress across the U.S. supply chain, with more than 1,200 warehouse workers in Indiana facing job cuts and multiple small carriers seeking court protection, according to FreightWaves.

WARN Notices Signal Large-Scale Warehouse Closures

The largest cuts are tied to operations at a Radial LLC facility in Avon, Indiana. Humano LLC filed a WARN notice stating its entire operational unit at the site is expected to permanently cease on or about Aug. 17, affecting 586 employees, mostly freight handlers. SIMOS, a staffing firm, also filed a WARN notice for the same Avon address, reporting its entire operation there will cease with separations on Aug. 17, impacting 574 employees in roles including receiving, equipment operator, support, lead, sorter, and shipping loader.

Ryder Integrated Logistics filed a separate WARN notice in Indiana, announcing 76 layoffs at a customer site in Plainfield. Ryder said the mass layoff is expected to be permanent effective July 31, citing a customer’s changing business needs, though operations at the site are expected to continue.

Trucking Bankruptcies Spread Across Small Carriers

Recent bankruptcy filings span truckload, LTL, warehousing, and cold storage, as reported by FreightWaves:

Company Type Location Date Impact
Tucker Boyz Transportation LLC Chapter 11 Memphis, Tennessee June 23 $126,000 assets; $152,000 liabilities; 22 trucks, 22 drivers
Travelers Xpress Services Inc. Chapter 11 Fort Lauderdale, Florida June 22 Warehousing/storage; assets and liabilities $500K–$1M
Navstar Express LLC Chapter 7 Chicago, Illinois June 18 Interstate carrier; 2 trucks, 2 drivers
Touchstone Logistics LLC Chapter 11 Cockeysville, Maryland June 13 Assets $50K–$100K; liabilities $1M–$10M
Power Lane Logistics Distribution & Warehousing Inc. Chapter 11 Tracy, California June 19 Assets and liabilities $1M–$10M
Azhderian Cold Storage LLC Chapter 11 Los Banos, California June 24 Refrigerated warehousing; assets and liabilities $0–$50K

The filings illustrate distress across a wide range of transportation-related businesses, from small truckload and LTL carriers to warehouse labor providers, cold storage entities, and contract logistics operations.

Shipper Implications and Recommended Actions

For freight forwarders, 3PLs, and shippers, the closures and bankruptcies present immediate operational risks. The loss of 1,160 warehouse jobs at the Avon, Indiana site could disrupt fulfillment for customers relying on Radial’s network. Shippers using affected carriers like Tucker Boyz (Memphis) or Touchstone Logistics (Maryland) should identify alternative capacity for their lanes, especially in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. Cold chain shippers should note the Chapter 11 filing by Azhderian Cold Storage in California, which may require re-routing temperature-sensitive goods. Ryder’s layoff at a customer site in Plainfield may affect contract logistics for that specific customer, though Ryder stated operations continue.

Watch List

  • Aug. 17, 2026: Scheduled closure of Humano and SIMOS operations at Avon, IN facility—1,160 workers to be separated.
  • July 31, 2026: Ryder Integrated Logistics layoff effective date in Plainfield, IN.
  • Continued Chapter 11 filings may signal further consolidation in the small carrier segment, potentially tightening capacity on select lanes.
  • The WARN Act filings suggest larger warehouses and staffing firms are under pressure as customer contracts change or end, which could lead to more facility closures.

Tropical Storm Bertha is slowly moving along the Gulf Coast, threatening significant coastal flooding and heavy rainfall that could disrupt logistics and supply chains, according to FreightWaves. Despite a predicted quiet hurricane season due to El Niño, slow-moving storms like Bertha pose serious risks to freight operations, particularly from localized heavy downpours and storm surge.
