The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is spearheading a regulatory overhaul to fast-track the deployment of air taxis, supersonic passenger aircraft, and drones, according to statements from the Farnborough International Airshow. Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau told Reuters the agency is working to streamline certification processes while giving industry greater flexibility to innovate.
FAA eVTOL Pilot Program Expands
The FAA launched an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program last year, involving eight partner companies across 26 US states. Data from the trials will support future certification efforts. "The whole idea behind this is to take this new technology, these new aircraft, and put them into the national airstream in a safe and efficient manner," Rocheleau said, according to Reuters.
Aerospace company Beta Technologies recently completed the first test flights under the programme, as reported by CNBC. The flights transported manufactured organs between airports in Maryland and Virginia, covering about 275 nautical miles. Beta is participating in seven of the eight pilot projects and expects certification of its conventional electric aircraft in 2027 and its eVTOL aircraft in 2028.
Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein compared the eVTOL rollout to Google's self-driving vehicle programme. "I think the world has learned a lot in how the autonomous vehicles have launched," Goldstein told Reuters. He added the FAA pilot programme "gives the eVTOL industry the ability to roll this out to a couple cities in a confined area that we can kind of work through the kinks in the system."
Infrastructure and Commercialisation Plans
Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, and Macquarie Capital recently formed America's Consortium for Electric Skyways (ACES) to develop charging infrastructure for electric aircraft. The consortium plans to establish up to 250 interoperable charging sites across major US airports and metropolitan areas over the next decade to support commercial eVTOL operations.
Regulatory Push for Supersonic Travel
The FAA is also moving to revive commercial supersonic passenger flights. The agency proposed the first of two new rules in June to lift a ban imposed in 1973 on supersonic flights over land. A second proposal will define acceptable noise limits during take-off, landing, and supersonic cruise, with both rules expected to be finalised by mid-2027. Rocheleau told Reuters: "We think the rules are old and outdated." Once the regulatory framework is in place, aircraft manufacturers will still need certification from the FAA and other regulators before supersonic aircraft can enter service. The era of regular commercial supersonic travel ended in 2003 when the Concorde was retired after 27 years.
