New RGB TV technology is spreading rapidly in 2026, offering a potential alternative to OLED that allows manufacturers to keep using LCD panels. According to WIRED, the first RGB TVs appeared in 2025, but wider distribution across sizes and prices is happening this year. The technology uses red, green, and blue backlight modules instead of standard white or blue LEDs, with Hisense, Samsung, LG, TCL, and Sony all fielding models under names like mini RGB, micro RGB, or True RGB.

What Are RGB TVs?

RGB TVs emit red, green, and blue lights through an LCD panel. According to Hisense, one of the first brands to debut an RGB LED TV, the goal is to produce "pure colors directly at the source." The result, according to WIRED's testing, is better colors, improved contrast, and much higher brightness—designed as a proper alternative to OLED. Samsung and LG call the technology "micro RGB," while TCL and Hisense say "mini RGB." Sony uses the term "True RGB" and claims no difference between mini RGB and micro RGB.

WIRED's reviewer found that mini RGB (used generically for all types) is noticeably vivid, has excellent contrast, and looks bright and clear even during the daytime. Off-angle viewing is also strong. However, the article notes that mini RGB is not a sea change like OLED, because OLED allows individual pixels to emit color or be turned off entirely. In side-by-side tests, mini RGB is a smart upgrade but not the ultimate display tech.

Pricing and Market Positioning

He found that mini RGB is highly customizable, drawing a comparison to a sports car that needs tweaking to perform fully. Mounting the TVs is straightforward with standard stud-finder techniques. The review concludes that while mini RGB is a vivid and capable technology, OLED remains superior in pixel-level control, and the higher price may not justify the upgrade for all consumers.

For manufacturing executives, the key takeaway is that RGB TV technology offers a path to higher performance without abandoning LCD infrastructure. As production scales and prices drop, OEMs should monitor this space for potential shifts in panel sourcing and assembly requirements.
