Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) was first commercialized in the early 19th century, and it remains a durable fitness technology — one now being repackaged as a $1,400 home body suit. German suit maker Pepper offered WIRED's Christopher Null a chance to test its electro-suit, which the company claims delivers in 20 minutes the caloric burn and muscle activation of an hour-long traditional workout, with less strain on the joints. But the medical community is far from unified on whether EMS delivers meaningful results for healthy users.
The Technology: Electricity as a Workout Accelerator
The core promise of EMS is straightforward, according to the review: stimulate muscles with pulses of electricity while working out to generate thousands of muscle contractions in a short period — far more than standard reps can produce. Users cannot simply lie down and let the suit do the work; they still have to activate muscles through flexing. Today EMS is widely used across rehabilitative medical applications as well as to boost strength and stamina.
The Home EMS Suit Market
Pepper is one of at least five companies selling home-use EMS suits, the review reported. Pepper's suit costs $1,400, which Null noted was the cheapest he found; Apeborn's offering runs $4,000. The home suits follow an earlier studio model: Body20 and Manduu outfit clients with electrodes and pair them with trainers, and both companies claim complete-body workouts in 20 minutes or less.
The Research Record
EMS has been studied in dozens of papers over the past 20 years, and while results vary, researchers are broadly optimistic, WIRED reported. The specific findings cited in the review:

Physicians Are Divided
Despite the research, WIRED reported that there is no general medical consensus about EMS technology. Among the six physicians Null interviewed, opinions spanned a wide spectrum.
"If you go outside and start shivering, those are muscle contractions," said Andrew Mock, a Newport Beach primary care physician and five-time winner of California's Strongest Man competition (lightweight division). "But shivering doesn't make you stronger." He said EMS had proven beneficial for rehab or critical care in patients with severe mobility restrictions, but healthy patients were unlikely to see much value.
At the other end was Ethan Kellum, team doctor for the NFL's Tennessee Titans, who told WIRED he uses EMS not just for rehabilitation but to supplement his own workouts. "It's really a function of the nervous system," Kellum said, noting that older patients' muscles can become unresponsive and "go to sleep." He added: "When used appropriately, EMS can help improve the efficiency of communication between the nervous system and the body. Add it to what you're doing."
For buyers evaluating an EMS suit — whether for personal use or a company wellness program — the review's key takeaway is that the hardware exists in a field with promising study results but no unified medical ruling, leaving the decision to individual risk tolerance and budget.
