MagSafe and Qi2 Power Banks: Enterprise IT Guide to Wireless Charging

For enterprise mobile workforces, keeping devices charged is a persistent operational challenge. According to WIRED's testing, magnetic power banks supporting Apple's MagSafe or the Qi2 standard offer a convenient solution, but technical differences affect charging speed, efficiency, and long-term battery health.

Understanding MagSafe and Qi2

MagSafe is Apple's accessory system integrated into the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 range, excluding the iPhone 16e. A ring of magnets on the back of the phone (and in MagSafe cases) transfers power more precisely and faster than traditional wireless chargers, and also holds accessories like wallets in place. WIRED noted that there is an enormous range of MagSafe-compatible accessories.

Qi2 is the next-generation wireless charging standard developed by Apple in collaboration with the Wireless Power Consortium. Compared to the original Qi standard, Qi2 brings MagSafe-style magnetic charging, faster charging rates, and improved efficiency. While MagSafe is an Apple technology designed for Apple products, any device can support Qi2. Apple updated the iPhone 12 and newer to support Qi2, so WIRED recommends looking for Qi2 compatibility when shopping for magnetic wireless chargers.

Qi2 Android phones are still thin on the ground, but Qi2 Ready phones add magnets using a compatible case. The latest update, Qi2 25W, allows a faster maximum charging rate of 25 watts, up from 15 watts. Supported phones include the iPhone 17 range and Google's Pixel 10 Pro XL.

Charging Speed and Efficiency

Most MagSafe power banks tested by WIRED wirelessly charge at a rate of up to 7.5 watts, but some newer models, like Anker's Qi2 power bank, can charge at up to 15 watts. WIRED emphasizes that wired charging is faster and more efficient than wireless charging. If you plug your phone in via cable to any power bank, you can expect to get more power more quickly than using MagSafe or Qi2. MagSafe is simply more convenient.

Charging Method Typical Speed Efficiency
MagSafe (most power banks) 7.5W Lower (loss to heat)
Anker Qi2 power bank 15W Improved over MagSafe
Qi2 25W (supported phones) 25W Higher
Wired (via cable) Faster Highest

Compatibility Considerations

Older iPhones, including the iPhone SE series, do not support MagSafe. MagSafe is not officially compatible with Android phones. Unless you have a MagSafe-compatible phone case, you should remove your case to use MagSafe power banks.

Battery Health Impact

WIRED reports that there isn't much evidence that MagSafe charging negatively impacts battery health, but it is less efficient than wired charging and can sometimes generate heat, which may degrade your battery faster. However, other factors are more important for preserving battery health, such as never fully draining your battery. MagSafe's magnets reduce the heat problem compared to Qi wireless charging by ensuring the charging coils are aligned. The Qi2 standard adopts a similar magnetic alignment mechanism.

For enterprise IT decision-makers, selecting power banks that support Qi2 25W can provide faster charging for newer iPhone and Android devices, while wired charging remains the most efficient option for bulk charging during downtime.
