Motorola Phones Now Have a Built-In Travel eSIM for Mobile Data Outside the US

According to a WIRED report, Motorola has integrated a native travel eSIM experience into its smartphones, aiming to simplify mobile data access for travelers outside the US. The feature is delivered through an app called Global Connect, which customers must initially download from the Google Play Store, but it will be preinstalled on future Motorola devices.

How Global Connect Works

The service is powered by Gigs, a San Francisco firm that helps companies sell mobile data plans without dealing with complex telecom negotiations. Motorola worked closely with Gigs to make the experience feel like a "Motorola-branded experience," according to the report. Users install the Global Connect app, create a Gigs account, and receive 1 GB of free data for their first travel eSIM (limited-time offer). They can then top up as needed.

"What we're trying to do for our consumers is solve that friction point of getting that travel eSIM quickly on the device as they're heading out to travel," Sudhir Chadaga, vice president for Partnerships at Motorola, told WIRED. "With Global Connect, that's exactly what we're bringing to our users."

Travel eSIMs are data-only, meaning they do not include voice calls or SMS. However, as the report notes, messaging apps like WhatsApp are widely adopted, mitigating this limitation.

Pricing and Availability

Motorola's travel eSIM offers competitive rates, according to the report:

Data Allowance Price Validity
1 GB $3 30 days
20 GB $14 30 days

The service is available in more than 160 countries, though the launch is initially limited to Latin American markets: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, and Chile. Motorola says support for Germany, the UK, and Europe is coming "in the next several weeks." US availability was not announced.

Any Motorola phone with eSIM capabilities—including the $180 2026 Moto G Play—can use Global Connect. The report notes that Motorola claims this is the first time a major smartphone manufacturer has embedded a travel eSIM natively, though Chinese maker Xiaomi offered a similar virtual travel SIM as far back as 2015 before discontinuing it.

Industry Context and Competition

The rise of travel eSIMs has been driven by ease of setup and lower costs compared to international roaming fees. Siddhant Cally, a senior analyst on the Networks and Connectivity team at Counterpoint Research, said: "In some regions, legacy network operators were offering roaming for half the data but at double the price of travel eSIMs."

The popularity of such services has prompted a response from US carriers. According to the report, T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T have introduced their own travel eSIM options for visitors to the US during the World Cup. Motorola's move further embeds this capability directly into the device, potentially reducing reliance on third-party apps or carrier roaming.
