Google Pixel 11 Pro's Rambler AI Voice-to-Text Strips Filler Words, WIRED Review Finds

WIRED's review of Google's Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL highlights Rambler, an AI-powered voice-to-text feature in Gboard that strips filler words, omits false starts, and can format or translate dictated messages. The reviewer tested the feature over a week, including Malayalam transliteration. WIRED also assessed HiLight as 'pretty useless,' with just five LED colors.

Google Pixel 11 Pro's Rambler AI Voice-to-Text Strips Filler Words, WIRED Review Finds

According to WIRED, Google's Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL include a new AI-powered voice-to-text feature called Rambler that removes "ums" and "uhs," skips restated mistakes, and can add bullet points or an emoji to a dictated message in the same breath. WIRED reviewer Julian Chokkattu, who tested the phones for the past week, wrote that Rambler caused his "jaw to drop" and called it "an upgrade over one of my most-used Pixel features: voice-to-text." The review was published August 19, 2026.

What Rambler does

To use Rambler, a user taps the microphone button on Gboard, Google's keyboard app, and starts talking, according to WIRED. The Pixel strips away the "ums" and "uhs," and if the speaker makes a mistake and restates something, the feature omits the false start and keeps only the parts it believes the user wants to convey. Chokkattu said the accuracy "is incredible, especially as you see it understand the mistakes, pauses, or vocal fillers." He then tried speaking in Malayalam, his mother tongue, and reported that Rambler "did a surprisingly great job at romanizing my words into English" — a way he sometimes types to family because he cannot read or write the language, something he had never been able to do with a smartphone's voice-to-text. He asked Rambler to translate the transcribed sentence into Malayalam, and it did. After sending the messages to his mother, she replied, "Very good."

"These are the kinds of features that make a Pixel phone feel joyous to use. Smart, helpful everyday capabilities that can make a genuine impact on your day." — Julian Chokkattu, WIRED

According to WIRED, Rambler is exclusive to the entire Pixel 11 range, including the base model, and is not restricted to the Pro devices. Google has not shared details on whether it will reach older Pixel phones.

The Pixel 11 Pro beyond Rambler

WIRED's review said the Pro Pixels this year "are not a major leap over their predecessors." Most improvements are in the cameras, which remain a big reason to buy a Pixel, according to the review. Other upgrades include a scratch-resistant display coating, a brighter screen, more base storage, and faster charging. Chokkattu praised the all-glass camera bar, which he wrote looks especially elegant in the new colors — Canyon on the Pixel 11 Pro XL and Olive on the Pixel 11 Pro — and does not rock on a table. WIRED also noted the Pixel 11 series are "still the only major Android phones with Qi2 magnets."

HiLight falls flat

HiLight, one of the new exclusive features on the Pro models, is unavailable on the base Pixel 11, WIRED reported. The LED glows when the phone is face down and when Gemini is activated, so users know the assistant is listening, much like Google's new smart speaker, and it can light up a specific color when someone calls. But there are only five colors to choose from, the review found. If a user wants to set a HiLight color for more than five people in Contacts, the colors have to be reused, "rendering the feature useless," according to WIRED.

A track record of useful AI features

Chokkattu described Rambler as an upgrade to the best-in-class voice typing on Pixel phones. He wrote that Google's Pixels are "far and away the best" at voice-to-text, more accurate than iPhones and Samsungs at understanding his words and sprinkling in punctuation at the right moments. He also recalled Call Screen, a Google feature that pioneered filtering spam and robocalls and is now a staple in competing devices, and Google Recorder, which he uses every day as a "powerful on-device transcription service." The review listed Magic Capture as useful and said Gemini Intelligence is helpful but limited, while battery life is "just adequate" and demanding games produced some graphics issues and unimpressive performance.

Feature WIRED's finding
Rambler AI voice-to-text; removes fillers, omits false starts, formats messages, transliterates and translates Malayalam
HiLight LED with five colors; useless when more than five contacts need distinct colors
Magic Capture Can be useful
Gemini Intelligence Helpful, if limited
Call Screen Google's pioneering spam filter; now standard on rivals
Google Recorder Daily-use on-device transcription service
Battery life Just adequate
Gaming performance Some graphics issues, unimpressive in demanding titles

What the review does not cover

WIRED's assessment of Rambler is based on consumer use over one week; the review does not include enterprise deployment metrics, cost figures, or integration standards beyond Gboard on Pixel 11 devices, and it does not describe supply chain, logistics, or trade applications for the feature.
