Many of the technologies underpinning the 2026 FIFA World Cup were first trialed in Qatar, as the country became FIFA’s proving ground for innovations that answer football’s oldest questions faster: Did the ball cross the line? Was the player offside? According to WIRED, the pattern began in 2021 with the FIFA Arab Cup, where several systems were tested together at scale for the first time.

Optical Player Tracking and Connected Ball Technology

Among the technologies tested in Qatar was optical player tracking: a network of high-precision stadium cameras capturing every player’s movement dozens of times per second with centimeter accuracy. These cameras, largely invisible to fans, became the foundation for decision-influencing systems. To answer exactly when a pass is played, FIFA introduced a connected ball with a sensor suspended at its center. Adidas first trialed the technology during the FIFA Arab Cup before launching the Al Rihla ball at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. WIRED reported that the impact was immediate: when Ecuador’s opening goal against Qatar was ruled out, the decision relied on identifying the precise moment the ball was played. Combined with AI-powered player tracking, the system transformed offside calls from lengthy reviews into decisions measured in milliseconds.

The FIFA Player App

The 2022 World Cup also saw the early rollout of the FIFA Player App, built in partnership with FIFPRO, the global organization for professional footballers. The app gave athletes direct access to their own performance data—positional heat maps, physical output, tactical actions—often within minutes of the final whistle. According to WIRED, this marked a subtle shift: performance analysis was no longer reserved for coaching staff but became part of the player experience.

VAR, Goal-Line Technology and Semiautomated Offside

By the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, many systems had moved beyond the trial stage. Semiautomated offside technology accelerated decisions that once took minutes into near-instant calls. The connected ball’s inertial sensor helped verify touches and refine accuracy for VAR (video assistant referee) reviews. Dedicated analyst workspaces and replay tablets gave coaching staff live video feeds and performance information during matches, enabling adjustments while the game was still unfolding. WIRED noted that these innovations were first validated in Qatar under real match conditions before reaching the global stage.
