Balaena Expands UK Shipbuilding with APCL Acquisition

Maritime engineering and shipbuilding group Balaena has acquired APCL Group, a move that significantly enhances its shipbuilding and repair capabilities across the UK. This acquisition brings under Balaena's control some of the UK's most renowned ship repair and shipbuilding facilities, including A&P Tyne, Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, and A&P Falmouth. This strategic expansion is set against a backdrop of anticipated growth in British naval and commercial maritime investment.

Strategic Expansion

The acquisition is a pivotal step for Balaena as it seeks to consolidate its position in the UK shipbuilding sector. According to Simon Gillett, founder and CEO of Balaena, "This acquisition reinforces our long-term commitment to British maritime capability." The integration of APCL's operations in Tyne, Birkenhead, and Falmouth with Balaena's existing facilities in Gibraltar and Padstow, Cornwall, aims to bolster the UK's ability to support both the Royal Navy and commercial shipping sectors.

Enhancing Capabilities

Balaena plans to modernize the newly acquired facilities, expand ship repair and offshore fabrication capacity, and develop capabilities related to low-emission propulsion systems. A national skills and apprenticeship program will be launched in collaboration with colleges and maritime training organizations, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future.

Industry Context

This acquisition is part of a broader trend of consolidation within the UK shipbuilding industry. Notably, Spain's Navantia acquired Harland & Wolff in early 2025, following the Belfast-based group's collapse. Such consolidations are expected to strengthen the UK's maritime infrastructure and support future naval and commercial projects.

Future Outlook

David McGinley, CEO of APCL, described the acquisition as "an exciting new chapter" that will secure the future of the yards and support investment in digital and green shipbuilding technologies. The deal not only promises to create jobs and apprenticeships but also positions Balaena as a key player in the evolving maritime landscape.

"This acquisition reinforces our long-term commitment to British maritime capability," said Simon Gillett, CEO of Balaena.

The next milestone for Balaena will be the implementation of its modernization plans and the launch of the national skills program, which will be closely watched by industry stakeholders.

Facility Location New Capabilities
A&P Tyne Tyne Ship Repair, Offshore Fabrication
Cammell Laird Birkenhead Naval Support, Low-Emission Systems
A&P Falmouth Falmouth Digital and Green Technologies

This strategic acquisition by Balaena is poised to reshape the UK's shipbuilding landscape, offering enhanced capabilities and supporting the nation's maritime ambitions.
