Coconut Oil Prices on the Boil on Onam Demand

Onam festival demand has lifted wholesale coconut oil prices to around ₹260 a kg in Kerala, with copra at ₹168 a kg, according to traders. While some traders allege artificial price creation, industry observers point to improved supplies and expect only moderate upward pressure in the coming weeks.

Coconut Oil Prices on the Boil on Onam Demand

Coconut oil wholesale prices have turned firm in southern India, with Onam festival demand lifting the market after months of subdued trading. According to traders quoted by The Hindu BusinessLine, wholesale coconut oil is ruling at around ₹260 a kg in Kerala against ₹242 in Tamil Nadu, while copra prices have moved up to ₹168 a kg in Kerala and ₹163 in Tamil Nadu.

Price Movement at a Glance

The festival-driven rally marks a clear divergence between the two southern states. The table below summarises the prevailing wholesale rates as reported by traders on August 12, 2026:

Commodity Kerala (₹/kg) Tamil Nadu (₹/kg)
Coconut oil (wholesale) 260 242
Copra 168 163
Raw coconut ~65

For context, coconut oil touched a record price of more than ₹500 a kg in July 2025, according to the report. The current price is still far below that peak, reflecting the improved supply environment compared with last year's deficit.

Supply-Side Signals

The price rise has not gone uncontested. Traders alleged that the increase was artificially created by vested interests in a neighbouring State to cash in on the Onam season by holding copra stocks, despite sufficient availability of the raw material in the market. The market has, however, remained steady over the past few days, as procurement agencies reportedly withdrew from purchases following the price surge, forcing millers to moderate prices.

On the supply outlook, KK Devraj, a consultant to the coconut oil industry, said improved local arrivals and better regional crop yields following last year's severe pest attacks and weather disruptions had helped ease supply constraints. Despite the notable improvement in supplies from last year's massive deficit, he noted that Onam traditionally drives a 10–20 per cent increase in local demand. Raw coconut prices have risen to around ₹65 a kg, according to the same report.

Thalath Mahmood, President of the Cochin Oil Merchants Association (COMA), added that the ongoing harvest season in several producing States had ensured adequate availability of copra and there was no justification for the price rise. He expects the upward trend to ease once the festival season is over.

Demand Drivers for the Festival Season

Onam demand is being supported by multiple channels. The report highlights that demand is expected to remain firm through the festival period, supported by household cooking requirements, industrial production of sweets and snacks, and subsequent pan-India demand ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi and the Sabarimala season. This broad-based consumption pattern typically extends the demand surge beyond Kerala's own border.

The 10–20 per cent festive uplift, combined with the ongoing harvest, sets up a market where demand is robust but supply availability is far better than in the crisis year of 2025–26.

Improved raw material availability is expected to cap inflation and prevent extreme fluctuations.

Outlook and Price Expectations

The near-term price path is likely to remain firm but contained. According to KK Devraj, prices are likely to face moderate upward pressure during the peak two to three weeks preceding Onam owing to immediate retail demand. However, unlike previous years, when severe shortages triggered sharp price spikes, the improved raw material availability is expected to cap inflation and prevent extreme fluctuations. Retail coconut oil prices are therefore likely to remain relatively steady rather than approach historic highs, he added.

Market participants are closely watching the behaviour of procurement agencies and millers in the coming days. The withdrawal of agencies from purchases after the surge has already prompted millers to moderate prices, indicating that the rally may have limited headroom. With the Onam season drawing closer, the balance between immediate retail demand and comfortable copra arrivals will decide whether the ₹260/kg wholesale level holds or eases, according to traders.

The report was published on August 12, 2026, and the upcoming festival calendar — Ganesh Chaturthi and the Sabarimala pilgrimage season — is expected to keep demand firm for the rest of the quarter.
