Indian Potash Ltd partners with UPL arm to boost sugarcane yield in Gujarat mill area

Indian Potash Ltd (IPL), one of India's leading fertilizer importers and suppliers, has entered into a three-year collaboration agreement with UPL Sustainable Agri Solutions Ltd (UPL SAS), a subsidiary of agrochemical firm UPL Ltd, to enhance sugarcane productivity and sustainability in the catchment area of IPL's Kodinar Sugar Mill in Gujarat, according to a company statement released on July 4, 2026.

Partnership Overview

The partnership aims to implement regenerative farm practices, advanced agronomy, crop protection, nutrition management, digitalisation, and farmer capacity-building initiatives across 2,000 acres of sugarcane cultivation. Under the agreement, UPL SAS will deploy a dedicated Program Officer to lead field-level implementation and farmer engagement activities. The initiative will focus on optimising key agricultural resources including seed, soil, water, fertilizer use, and crop residue management.

Objectives and Scope

Parties Indian Potash Ltd (IPL) & UPL Sustainable Agri Solutions Ltd (UPL SAS)
Duration 3 years
Location Catchment area of IPL's Kodinar Sugar Mill, Gujarat
Area 2,000 acres of sugarcane cultivation
Key Focus Areas Regenerative farming, advanced agronomy, crop protection, nutrition management, digitalisation, farmer capacity-building

Strategic Context

IPL is one of the leading importers, suppliers, and distributors of fertilizers in India. The company also operates in sugar manufacturing, agriculture services, and allied sectors. Its Kodinar Sugar Mill in Gujarat serves as the focal point for this collaboration. UPL SAS, a subsidiary of UPL Ltd, brings expertise in sustainable agricultural solutions.

U S Teotia, Chief Agricultural Scientist at IPL, said the company is committed to supporting farmers through innovative and sustainable solutions. "This partnership with UPL will help strengthen our farmer engagement efforts, improve cane productivity and contribute to the long-term growth and competitiveness of our Kodinar Sugar operations," he stated. Teotia added that the integration of scientific agronomy, digital monitoring, and regenerative farming practices can significantly enhance sugarcane productivity while conserving natural resources.

The collaboration aligns with broader trends in Indian agriculture toward digitalisation and sustainability. By focusing on resource optimisation — seed, soil, water, fertiliser, and residue management — the partnership aims to boost yields on the targeted 2,000 acres, potentially serving as a model for other sugar mills. For commodity traders and analysts tracking sugarcane supply, this initiative could signal increased output from the Kodinar region, though specific yield targets were not disclosed. The three-year timeline allows for phased implementation and measurement of agronomic improvements.
