The Department of Consumer Affairs has mandated nine standard pack sizes for edible oils under the Legal Metrology framework, a move that Gokul Agro Resources Ltd (GARL) says will "enhance transparency, simplify price comparison, and strengthen consumer confidence" across the edible oils market. The notification, which covers sizes ranging from 200 ml/g to 20 litre/kg, includes a three-month transition period for industry compliance, according to a statement from the integrated edible oil and agro-processing manufacturer.
Regulatory Reform
The notification introduces standardised pack sizes under the Legal Metrology framework, specifically targeting non-standard pack sizes that often make it difficult for consumers to accurately compare prices and assess value across brands. The Department of Consumer Affairs has prescribed nine specific sizes, ranging from the smallest 200 ml/g to the largest 20 litre/kg, with a three-month compliance window for the industry to adjust.
Industry Welcomes the Move
Gokul Agro, through its Chief Business Officer Arun Harne, expressed strong support for the regulation. In a media statement, Harne said:
We welcome the Government's decision to reintroduce standard pack sizes for edible oils. In a category where consumers often make purchase decisions based on visible pack prices, standardisation will help simplify value comparisons and enable more informed choices. It is a consumer-first reform that strengthens transparency at the retail shelf and encourages competition based on quality, consistency, and trust rather than packaging variations.
Harne emphasised that transparent market practices are "essential for building long-term consumer confidence" and that the reform benefits both consumers and responsible industry players focused on delivering genuine value. He noted that the move supports fair competition across the industry.
Company Performance
Alongside the regulatory announcement, Gokul Agro reported its strongest-ever financial performance in fiscal 2025-26. According to the company, revenue crossed ₹24,000 crore, sales volumes reached 19.2 lakh tonnes, and profit after tax grew 50% year-on-year. The company serves millions of households through a diversified edible oil portfolio, positioning it as a key industry player.
Implications for Market Transparency
The standardisation of pack sizes is expected to enhance price transparency at the retail level, allowing consumers to make more informed choices. This development is particularly relevant for commodity traders and procurement teams tracking edible oil markets, as it removes packaging-based pricing variations and enables clearer per-unit cost comparisons. The three-month transition period gives the industry time to align with the new norms, which the Department of Consumer Affairs expects to foster fair competition and trust.
Gokul Agro's strong 2025-26 performance — with revenue exceeding ₹24,000 crore, volumes of 19.2 lakh tonnes, and 50% PAT growth — underscores its capacity to lead such market reforms. The company's backing of the standardisation initiative signals broader industry support for regulatory measures that benefit both consumers and responsible processors.
