BP Taps DeepOcean for Foinaven Subsea Decommissioning Campaign

Norwegian ocean services player DeepOcean has secured a contract with BP for the decommissioning and recycling of subsea equipment at the Foinaven field. The scope includes removal of ten flexible process risers and three dynamic subsea umbilicals from the former FPSO location. The project will be managed from DeepOcean's Aberdeen base and builds on previous decommissioning work at Don and Miller fields.

BP Taps DeepOcean for Foinaven Subsea Decommissioning Campaign

Norwegian ocean services player DeepOcean has entered into an agreement to support BP in the decommissioning and recycling of subsea equipment at the supermajor's Foinaven field, according to Splash247. The contract covers the removal of ten flexible process risers and three dynamic subsea umbilicals from the former Foinaven FPSO location.

Contract Scope

Under the agreement, DeepOcean will remove ten flexible process risers and three dynamic subsea umbilicals from the Foinaven field. Additionally, a static umbilical will be recovered. Various amounts of buoyancy, riser protection, clamps, and other appurtenances associated with each riser will also be removed during recovery operations.

The scope of work includes:

  • 10 flexible process risers
  • 3 dynamic subsea umbilicals
  • 1 static umbilical
  • Buoyancy modules
  • Riser protection structures
  • Clamps and associated hardware

Project Execution

Engineering, project management, and offshore execution of the project will be managed and executed by DeepOcean's Aberdeen-based operations in the UK. The offshore scope will be carried out using a high-specification subsea construction vessel operated by DeepOcean. The company's Aberdeen team has extensive experience in North Sea decommissioning projects.

Field Background

Foinaven was discovered in 1992 and achieved first oil in 1997. The field is located approximately 190 km west of the Shetland Islands, in water depths ranging between 330 and 530 metres. Before the FPSO was taken off-station in 2021, the Foinaven asset produced 440 million barrels of oil – double the volume expected when the field was initially developed.

Parameter Value
Discovery year 1992
First oil 1997
Distance from Shetland 190 km west
Water depth 330–530 m
Total production 440 million barrels (double initial estimate)
FPSO removal 2021

Previous Decommissioning Work

This agreement builds on the successful decommissioning work delivered by DeepOcean for BP at the Don and Miller fields under a similar commercial model. The relationship between BP and DeepOcean in the North Sea decommissioning space continues to strengthen with this new campaign. The Foinaven project represents a significant addition to DeepOcean's portfolio in the UK continental shelf.
