Eni Extends Ventura Offshore Rig Contract in Indonesia, Adding $25.1 Million to Backlog

Offshore driller Ventura Offshore has secured a contract extension from Eni for its SSV Catarina semisubmersible rig in Indonesia, according to a company announcement reported by Splash247. The Italian energy giant exercised an option to drill a fourth well and a tophole, locking in additional revenue and extending the rig's deployment through the fourth quarter of 2026.

Contract Details

The option was exercised by Eni Muara Bakau, a subsidiary of Searah, a joint venture company between Eni and Petronas. The exercise of these wells is expected to keep the rig utilized into the fourth quarter of 2026 and further increase the company’s firm backlog by approximately $25.1 million. The SSV Catarina started working for Eni in August 2024. Apart from well options in Indonesia, Eni holds a fixed-price option for one well in Vietnam.

Rig Specifications and Fleet

The SSV Catarina became part of the Ventura Offshore fleet in June 2024 when it was purchased from Umas 1 for $105 million. Ventura Offshore owns and operates one drillship, DS Carolina, and two semisubs, SSV Victoria and SSV Catarina, and further manages one drillship, Atlantic Zonda. Currently, the company's drilling rigs are operating offshore Brazil and Indonesia.

Implications for Offshore Drilling Market

While the contract extension does not directly impact commodity prices, it reflects ongoing demand for offshore drilling services in Southeast Asia, particularly from major oil and gas operators like Eni. The backlog increase signals stable utilization for semisubmersible rigs in the region, which can support continued exploration and production activities. Ventura Offshore's growing presence in Indonesia and Brazil highlights the global scope of offshore energy projects.

Metric Detail
Rig Name SSV Catarina
Operator Eni (via Eni Muara Bakau)
Location Indonesia
Contract Start August 2024
Extension Scope Fourth well and tophole
Backlog Addition ~$25.1 million
End of Utilization Q4 2026
Additional Option One well in Vietnam (fixed-price)

For commodity traders and analysts, this contract extension is a data point in the broader offshore drilling supply chain, which influences oil production capacity. Continued rig utilization in Indonesia, a key oil and gas province, supports steady supply flows from the region. Further updates on Eni's drilling programs and Ventura Offshore's fleet deployment will be monitored for shifts in energy supply dynamics.
