Complex Fertilizer Sales Surge 27% in May Amid Urea Decline

In May, complex fertilizer sales in India surged by 27%, reaching 11.02 lakh tonnes, according to a report by AGRI_TIO. This increase helped offset the decline in sales of other fertilizers such as urea and di-ammonia phosphate (DAP), which saw reductions in consumption compared to the previous year.

Supply and Demand Dynamics

The rise in complex fertilizer sales comes after a period of panic buying in March and April, triggered by geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran. This led to a surge in fertilizer sales, prompting the Indian government to work with states to reduce consumption. Despite these efforts, overall fertilizer consumption in May was 39.5 lakh tonnes, slightly above the 39.4 lakh tonnes recorded a year ago.

Government Efforts to Curb Usage

The Indian government, led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has been actively working to reduce the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. In a communication to state leaders, Chouhan highlighted concerns over soil degradation and environmental impacts due to imbalanced fertilizer use. He urged political leaders to promote natural farming practices and reduce chemical fertilizer consumption through initiatives like the "Khet Bachao Abhiyan" (save soil campaign).

Price and Market Trends

While the government has managed to maintain retail prices for urea and DAP, the prices of popular NPK products have increased by 16-41% from a year ago. This price rise reflects the shifting dynamics in the fertilizer market, where complex fertilizers are gaining traction due to their balanced nutrient composition.

Future Outlook

The Indian government's push for balanced fertilizer use and natural farming practices is expected to continue influencing market trends. As part of these efforts, leaders are encouraged to promote alternative fertilizers and balanced nutrient management practices. The ongoing "Khet Bachao Abhiyan" aims to raise awareness and encourage sustainable agricultural practices, which could further impact fertilizer consumption patterns in the coming months.
