Maharashtra's Expert Panel to Address Onion Price Decline

The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step to address the ongoing decline in onion prices by forming an expert sub-committee. This move aims to provide both immediate and long-term solutions to strengthen the state's onion sector, which is crucial for the local economy.

Formation of the Expert Panel

The sub-committee was established under a secretary-level committee by the Cooperation, Marketing and Textiles Department. This initiative, as per the government resolution issued, is tasked with examining the factors behind the fall in onion prices and assessing the impact of the Centre's onion export policy over the past seven to eight years. The panel will also recommend measures to enhance the crop's value chain.

Key Members and Responsibilities

The sub-committee includes notable figures such as Dr. Kisanrao Lawande, former vice-chancellor of Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Sunil Pawar, former Director of Marketing, Sarang Nirmal, president of the Indo Vegetables Development Association, entrepreneur Narendra Pawar, and Sharad Jare, Maharashtra Director of Marketing, who will serve as the member secretary. Their responsibilities include:

  • Integrating quality onion varieties into the agriculture value chain.
  • Analyzing the root causes of the price crash.
  • Preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on high-temperature storage and its cost implications.
  • Studying onion by-products.
  • Examining the Centre's onion export policy and its impact on market prices.
  • Visiting onion storage facilities developed by the National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation at Rajgurunagar, Pune.

Supply and Demand Dynamics

Maharashtra, being the largest onion-producing state in India, faces recurring price volatility, particularly affecting farmers in the Nashik belt. The expert panel's formation is a response to this volatility, aiming to stabilize prices and support farmers.

Outlook and Next Steps

The sub-committee is expected to submit its comprehensive report with recommendations to the state government within 15 days. This report will be crucial in shaping future policies and interventions to stabilize onion prices and support the agricultural community in Maharashtra.

The formation of this expert panel highlights the state's proactive approach to addressing agricultural challenges. For commodity traders and analysts, the outcomes of this panel could signal shifts in supply dynamics and market strategies, making it a development to watch closely.
