Vinted, one of Europe’s largest marketplaces for pre-owned items, has entered a strategic partnership with DHL Group to integrate Germany's most extensive parcel network into its platform, according to an announcement on Wednesday. The collaboration will allow Vinted users to ship and collect parcels through DHL's network of Packstations (automated self-service lockers), Poststations (digital Deutsche Post retail outlets), and DeinFach lockers (carrier-neutral parcel lockers), making peer-to-peer transactions as convenient as ordering from online retailers.
The Partnership and Network Expansion
The partnership builds on a multi-month pilot program completed by both companies, DHL spokeswoman Sarah Preuss explained in an email. A particular focus is on locker-to-locker shipping, which the companies expect to be used more widely on the platform in the future. Using DHL Packstations, sellers can drop off parcels any time, and buyers can collect them at their convenience. Shipping via Packstations is already available without prior registration, and buyers do not need to register for the Packstation service to receive parcels—the collection code is sent via email and will soon be available directly through Vinted.
DHL operates 41,000 parcel drop-off and collection points across Germany, including post offices, parcel shops, and automated facilities. The network of Packstations, Poststations, and DeinFach lockers currently stands at 18,500 locations and is expected to grow to more than 30,000 by 2030, enabling continued growth of e-commerce and re-commerce. Out-of-home delivery is less expensive for carriers and more environmentally friendly than residential delivery, DHL noted.
Market Context and User Behavior
Private-party sales of used goods through online marketplaces have surged in Germany. According to the latest DHL E-Commerce Trends Report, 67% of online shoppers in the country have already sold items via a digital platform. The same report indicates that 70% of respondents use parcel shops or automated lockers to ship items they have sold online; only 30% hand over goods in person. A Vinted survey conducted in May found that 52% of sellers list items to avoid wasting what someone else might want. Vinted also reports that the average price for fashion items on its platform is 72€ (approximately $72) lower than original retail prices for new items.
"Reselling used goods online has evolved from a niche activity to an everyday phenomenon within just a few years. As a result, expectations regarding shipping are rising. People buying and selling privately want shipping to involve as little effort as possible. … Many people want to send or collect parcels independently of opening hours. This is exactly why automated solutions such as Packstations are becoming increasingly important. That is also why we will continue to invest heavily in expanding our automated network in the years ahead," said Benjamin Rasch, head of sales and products, Post & Parcel Germany, DHL Group.
Implications for Marketplace Operators and Logistics Partners
For cross-border e-commerce sellers and marketplace operators, this partnership highlights the growing importance of convenient, automated last-mile solutions for peer-to-peer transactions. Integrating locker networks can reduce delivery costs and failed delivery rates while increasing user satisfaction. DHL's planned expansion from 18,500 to 30,000 automated points by 2030 signals significant investment in out-of-home delivery, which may influence how other marketplaces structure their logistics.
| Service | DHL Collection Points | Access | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packstations | Automated lockers | 24/7 | No registration needed for Vinted users |
| Poststations | Digital retail outlets | During hours | Standard postal business |
| DeinFach | Carrier-neutral lockers | 24/7 | Vinted integration |
The partnership also reinforces the circular economy model, keeping items out of landfills. For B2B logistics managers, the trend toward centralized pickup locations could reduce per-parcel costs and improve route efficiency. Marketplace operators monitoring shipping options may consider similar integrations with parcel locker networks to retain cross-border sellers who demand frictionless logistics.
