How carriers can scale with Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses program

Goldman Sachs' 10,000 Small Businesses program offers small trucking companies and owner-operators a fully funded, 12-week business education curriculum—and direct pathways to capital—to scale beyond the owner-capacity bottleneck that often breaks growing fleets.

Program structure and curriculum

Designed in partnership with Babson College, the program's modules include Vision & Strategy and Operations & Technology. These directly address the operational bottleneck that occurs when a fleet runs on one person's memory rather than structured systems. The curriculum teaches business owners to replace themselves in day-to-day tactical roles and build repeatable processes, freeing cognitive capacity to lead a larger organization. The program requires a serious time commitment of approximately 10 hours per week of intensive instruction and networking over the 12-week period.

Bridging the capital gap

Growth requires capital for new equipment, hiring drivers, or carrying receivables for 30 to 60 days—all of which drain cash reserves. The 10,000 Small Businesses program provides direct pathways to capital through its network of local and national lending partners. Participants gain access to lenders who review applications on an ongoing basis, with an average loan size of $52,000 to help fuel customized growth plans.

Eligibility and access

The program is 100% funded by the Goldman Sachs Foundation, meaning zero tuition cost for accepted participants. To qualify, a trucking company must meet baseline criteria:

  • Ownership: Applicant must be an owner or co-owner of the business.
  • Operational History: Business must have been operating for at least two years.
  • Revenue: Company must have generated $75,000 or more in revenue in one of the past two fiscal years.
  • Staffing: Business must have at least two employees, which can include the owner.

Carriers can apply for local, in-person cohorts at community colleges across 19 regional locations, or apply to the online-based National Cohort if they do not reside near a physical location.

Real results

According to data published by Goldman Sachs, the program delivers measurable outcomes for small carriers:

Metric 6 months after graduation 30 months after graduation
Revenue growth 66% of alumni report increased revenue 74% report increased revenue
Job creation 44% have created new jobs 53% have created new jobs

These figures indicate that the combination of structured education and capital access helps small carriers plan for growth without relying solely on market luck. By transitioning from transactional, day-to-day survival to strategic management, carriers can scale with confidence and reduce the vulnerabilities that come with adding assets.
