PTI reported that Maharashtra has extended the last date for enrolment under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) from July 31 to August 10, with the scheme seeing 61.82 lakh farmer registrations so far, Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharane said on Saturday. The extension was granted because some farmers could not complete the enrolment process due to technical issues, pending documentation and other personal reasons, Bharane said in a statement. He urged farmers to take advantage of the extended deadline, particularly in view of the El Nino conditions, and ensure they are covered under the crop insurance scheme.

Regional enrolment breakdown
According to the agriculture department, the 61.82 lakh enrolled farmers include 1.02 lakh in Konkan, 3.33 lakh in Nashik, 6.08 lakh in Pune, 2.40 lakh in Kolhapur, 13.25 lakh in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 2.43 lakh in Latur, 6.92 lakh in Amravati and 4.53 lakh in Nagpur. Bharane said Marathwada recorded the highest participation in the scheme, while Konkan registered the lowest response.

Coverage and application process
The scheme provides financial protection to farmers against crop losses caused by natural calamities, excessive rainfall, drought, floods, hailstorms and other weather-related events, according to Bharane. Farmers can apply through the PMFBY Crop Insurance App or the official PMFBY website, the minister said.
The agriculture department appealed to crop loan borrowers to contact their respective banks, while non-loanee farmers have been asked to submit their applications through the official PMFBY portal or the nearest Common Service Centre before the revised deadline.
"Not a single eligible farmer should be deprived of the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Farmers who have not yet applied should make use of the extended deadline and complete the process before August 10. Farmers can also apply through PMFBY Crop Insurance App or the official PMFBY website," Bharane said.
Enrolment window extended amid El Nino
The revised August 10 cut-off extends the original July 31 deadline, with Bharane explicitly urging farmers to enrol given El Nino conditions. The agriculture department's statement noted that technical issues, pending documentation and personal reasons had prevented some farmers from completing the process by the earlier date.
