Minister Piyush Goyal Wins UK-India Award for Elevating Trade Ties, CETA Set for July 15

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal was honoured with a special UK-India Award at the tenth anniversary of the India Global Forum (IGF) UK-India Awards 2026, according to the Economic Times. The ceremony celebrated the upcoming entry into force of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 15.

Award and Ceremony Details

The Economic Times reported that Goyal was joined on stage by UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle and IGF founder Manoj Ladwa as he received the special award. The UK-India Awards 2026 marked its tenth anniversary on Thursday evening. The event highlighted the deepening bilateral trade relationship between India and the United Kingdom.

Goyal's Remarks on CETA

"I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that this will be a success, and this CETA will become a template, will be a role model for many other free trade agreements in the future," said Goyal.

Goyal elaborated that the agreement is not only about "tariffs and rules of origin" and "trade in goods and services," but also about "collaborations in technology, in education, culture, the arts." He described CETA as "a fair, equitable, very balanced agreement" and acknowledged the negotiating teams who "over the years have painstakingly put in hours and hours of labour." Goyal noted that while parties "fought over every single line, over every single product," the process was conducted "in a spirit of fairness, in a spirit of accommodation, very sensitive to each other's interests and concerns."

Implications for Trade Professionals

For import/export professionals and trade policy analysts, the entry into force of CETA on July 15 represents a significant milestone in India-UK bilateral trade relations. The agreement covers tariffs, rules of origin, trade in goods and services, and extends to technology, education, culture, and the arts, as highlighted by Goyal. The minister's confidence that CETA will become a "role model" for future free trade agreements suggests that the provisions and negotiation framework may influence upcoming trade deals involving India and other partners. Customs brokers and compliance officers should prepare for new tariff schedules and rules of origin requirements effective July 15. The recognition of Goyal's efforts through the UK-India Award underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in advancing trade liberalisation.
