The Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has confirmed that there is no ban on the import of Indian mangoes by Nepal, despite recent media reports suggesting otherwise. The ministry clarified that while Nepal has revised certain import conditions, exports continue without interruption.
Export Volumes
Since January 2026, India has exported a total of 149 consignments comprising 2,005 tonnes of mangoes to Nepal. In June 2026 alone, 18 consignments totaling 266 tonnes have been exported, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Revised Import Conditions
The Government of Nepal has introduced new import conditions, including the requirement for Hot Water Treatment (HWT). Despite these changes, India continues to facilitate exports in compliance with the prescribed requirements. The Indian government has expressed concerns over these new phytosanitary measures, which were introduced without prior consultation, and is addressing the issue through bilateral channels under the WTO SPS Agreement and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) framework.
Official Clarifications
The Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center, Nepal's National Plant Protection Organization, has clarified that no ban has been imposed on Indian mango imports. Imports are permitted subject to compliance with phytosanitary requirements, and import permits and release orders are issued upon submission of valid phytosanitary certificates from the Government of India.
Trade Data
According to government data, India's exports of Guavas, Mangoes/Mangosteens Fresh or Dried (HS Code 080450) were valued at Rs 43.45 crore in 2024-25, up from Rs 29.64 crore in 2023-24.
The Ministry of Agriculture has urged stakeholders and traders to rely on official communications for accurate information regarding import and export regulations, advising them to disregard unverified reports of trade restrictions.
