Emerging Technologies Will Define Next Phase of India-US Ties, Says Ambassador Kwatra

Indian Ambassador to the United States, Kwatra, declared that emerging technologies will define the next phase of India-US bilateral relations, according to a report by the Economic Times. Addressing the USISPF Leadership Summit, Kwatra positioned India as a preferred destination for companies diversifying production and supply chains beyond traditional manufacturing hubs.

India's Economic Trajectory

Kwatra described India, currently a USD 4.3 trillion economy, as on course to become a USD 7 trillion economy by the end of the decade, expanding to around USD 14 trillion by the mid-2030s, and reaching between USD 25 trillion and USD 30 trillion by 2047. He characterised India as an "indispensable anchor" of global economic growth and stability amid mounting geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain disruptions.

Metric Current (2025) End of Decade (2030) Mid-2030s 2047
Economy size (USD) 4.3 trillion 7 trillion ~14 trillion 25-30 trillion

"What that has meant domestically for us in India under the leadership of Prime Minister since 2014, has been a series of economically transformative measures on the ground, which have resulted in our consistently high growth of seven plus per cent, which is uniquely driven by domestic demand," Kwatra said.

Strategic Investments in Emerging Technologies

Kwatra highlighted that India has stepped up investments in strategic sectors including semiconductors, electronics, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and defence manufacturing, strengthening its role in global value chains. These sectors are core to the emerging technologies that will underpin the next phase of India-US ties, he noted.

Atmanirbhar Bharat and Global Supply Chains

Referring to the government's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), Kwatra emphasised it is not an inward-looking policy but one aimed at creating globally competitive manufacturing and resilient supply chains.

"The prime minister has propounded... a mixture of self-reliance and self-sufficiency, but an ecosystem which has positive externalities, which is not insular in nature," Kwatra said.

He linked India's economic rise to global prosperity, making international partnerships more important than ever. The Ambassador stressed that India's consistently high growth of seven-plus percent, driven by domestic demand, positions the country as a key partner for US firms seeking supply chain diversification.

Implications for Trade Partners

For import/export professionals and trade policy analysts, Kwatra's remarks signal that India is actively courting foreign investment in high-tech manufacturing and emerging technologies. The focus on semiconductors, electronics, AI, clean energy, and defence indicates where trade and investment flows are likely to intensify. The reiterated commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat as a globally engaged policy suggests that India will continue to lower barriers for companies that contribute to its manufacturing ecosystem while maintaining a competitive edge.
