MSC Achieves Record 21.6% Global Market Share

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has set a new benchmark in the shipping industry by capturing 21.6% of the global container market, according to Alphaliner data. This milestone surpasses the previous record held by Maersk at 19.3% in 2018, marking a significant shift in market dynamics.

Strategic Expansion

MSC's rise to market dominance is attributed to its aggressive acquisition strategy initiated in August 2020. The company focused on purchasing secondhand vessels, acquiring a total of 461 ships by November 2025. In addition, MSC's newbuilding program delivered 54 vessels totaling 695,185 TEU in 2025, contributing to an 11.7% fleet growth that year.

Market Impact

The dissolution of the 2M alliance with Maersk in January 2023 allowed MSC to establish a standalone east-west network, launched in February 2025. This network includes 34 loops across five trades, enhancing MSC's operational independence. The company's strategic moves have positioned it as a formidable alliance-free carrier.

Vertical Integration

MSC's expansion is not limited to fleet growth. The company increased its stake in Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) to 60% in 2019 and acquired Log-In Logistica in 2021. The €5.7 billion purchase of Bolloré Africa Logistics in 2022, rebranded as AGL, further extended MSC's influence in logistics networks across Europe, Latin America, and Africa.

Competitive Landscape

While MSC focused on capacity growth, rivals like Maersk pursued different strategies, such as deepening their integrator model and forming the Gemini Cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd. The top 10 container carriers collectively held 84.7% of the global market by the end of May, just shy of the all-time high.

The concentration of market share among the top carriers underscores the competitive nature of the shipping industry and the strategic decisions that differentiate leaders like MSC.

Watch List

  • Fleet Expansion: Continued monitoring of MSC's fleet growth and newbuilding deliveries.
  • Market Share Dynamics: Potential shifts in market share among top carriers.
  • Alliance Developments: Changes in carrier alliances and their impact on global trade routes.

Emotional Toll on Seafarers Poses Structural Risk to Global Shipping

A growing body of research, including surveys by Nautilus Federation and ISWAN, reveals that family separation and relationship strain among seafarers are becoming structural risks to the shipping industry. Nearly one in three seafarers has experienced a serious relationship breakdown linked to time away from home, and divorce rates are 20–30% higher than the national average. Welfare organisations report rising calls for relationship support, and experts warn that emotional distress affects concentration, retention, and operational safety.
